I’m such a summer person, I hate this time of year! What things do you like doing on weekends?

Yes, it’s grim.

We like going out to the nearest countryside whenever weather permits (we’re in London) - but at least we can go into the city on crappy days.

If it’s scorrchio we head to the beach. But we’re the only people we know who do this from London! (We should really be living in Cornwall 🤣)

We went for a lovely walk this morning! Chilly, but quite sunny. Of course it's nicer when it's a bit warmer, but in this country (especially where I live), if you only go outside when it's warm and sunny, you're not going to get out much!

I agree. I am doing a lot of sorting out of cupboards, batch cooking and that sort of thing. I love reading so am doing that but under a heated blanket rather than in the garden. I also find going for walks with a friend means I'm less likely to come up with an excuse than if I'm going with the family and, once out, looking for signs of spring.
I'm also intentionally going outside each day after 5pm even if only for a few minutes seconds to note that it is getting lighter each day

That's a really good idea-I'm going to pinch that!

I actually quite enjoy the dark evenings but I’m lucky that I wfh a lot and on my office days I go out at lunchtime for a walk. A lot of people have to leave the house in the dark and come home in the dark which is horrible if it’s daily.
If I’m going out I usually opt for a Friday night as I did this week - I tend to have Saturdays to myself for the most part, dh and dc are occupied- I either go out for lunch with a friend, invite mil round for coffee and cake, go and see my mum or sometimes just lay on the sofa all day! Saturday night is also the most likely night that we get a takeaway. Sundays I get up and go for a swim early before anyone’s even awake, then we will go for a walk in the afternoon or sometimes drive to the beach for a walk and lunch. Now I’m in front of the fire relaxing while dh starts cooking a roast, ds is playing fifa with his friend who came round an hour ago and dd is tidying her room before her boyfriend comes round.
It’s a pretty typical weekend for us.

I hate it too. I can cope with the cold but the constant drizzle and cloud. But we just pretend it’s all fine because I’d lose my mind stuck inside.

This weekend was -
Sat:
Early morning family swim
Dance lessons for youngest whilst DS and I sat in the leisure centre cafe and played games (hangman, maths quizzes etc.) and DH went for a run.
Playing, cake making and lunch at home.
Afternoon visit to a wildlife centre.
I cooked whilst the kids watched a movie.

Sun:
Up early, ran 20 miles with a friend whilst kids and DH had a PJ morning. DH did laundry, washing up etc.
Swapped with DH so he could do his stupidly long run. Painting, crafts etc with kids (as little effort on my part as I can manage) and general housework.

The rest of today will be much the same. Our DCs are young so we do a lot of swapping so we can get out and do stuff. DCs need an easy day after a fairly full on one yesterday. Marathon training (and 100 mile training for DH) is at least forcing me to be outside!

I can assure you that having grown up in Brighton, it doesn’t feel like you’re the only people from London coming to the beach…

BitOutOfPractice · 09/02/2025 17:15

I agree op. I can cope with cold if it’s at least bright. But this dank, damp, dark weather can do one!

I go to the gym. Try and get a little buzz from that.

but generally, it’s pants.

Theresacatinmykitchenwhatamigonnado · 09/02/2025 17:20

I'm currently in central London, drinking cocktails with DD and pretending we don't have work tomorrow. She's gone to the bar for the last round (again) and then we are definitely heading home...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/02/2025 17:32

Last weekend was lovely and we went for a nice long walk on Sunday.

This weekend the weather has been horrible, but the weekend has been good because I was at the theatre on Friday night, out for lunch yesterday and then had a massage today, so none of them were weather dependent.

frozendaisy · 09/02/2025 17:32

Is it just you OP or do you need to consider others?

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 09/02/2025 17:36

I don't mind the cold but haven't seen any sunshine for weeks - just eternal grey!!

Always get out for a long walk on Saturdays and Sundays unless it is torrential rain but am more than ready for Spring now!

user1471538283 · 09/02/2025 17:39

It's the rain that does me in and like you I'm getting impatient for warmth.

But it's coming. My legacy bluebells are coming through.

I go outside every day otherwise I just feel worse. I haven't done alot this weekend and it feels like a waste.

Daisydiary · 09/02/2025 17:51

This winter does seem to have gone on forever, and I usually like winter! It’s the lack of sun, definitely. Just days and days of grey. We do the usual weekend stuff, see friends, meals out, meet up with family, DC’s sports fixtures but everything seems that bit more drab. Probably watch more TV than we would in summer, which DH gets narky about as he likes to be out and about but we’ve already spent the morning at a football game and been for a brief walk in the drizzle so TV is fine by me 😂 We’ll do some baking/cook dinner later. I long for the days I can leave the kitchen and French doors open and chill in the garden in the sun with a good book!

Ilovelowry · 09/02/2025 17:58

Yeah, it's getting tedious now.

Today I walked the dogs and my toes nearly froze off. Did a workout. Did a tip run and a couple of hrs of weeding. Planted some seeds and had a nap.

Just keeping busy gets through the weekend.

I'm not a weekend person.
