Do you have a greenhouse?

If so, what is the ground like inside?

DH and I have just bought a greenhouse. In discussion about putting it up it's become clear that he is expecting the inside to have a path up the middle with earth for planting on one side and a work bench on the other. However I was expecting it to be all slabs/hard standing inside with work bench both sides to hold pots of things growing.
Both of us are insisting our way is the most common. So which is it?

Happy to be told I'm wrong on this dull topic of discussion 😁

I’ve only ever seen them completely slabbed inside (not that I’ve seen many!)

My grandma’s is slabbed but with grow bags on the sides.

You’re right in my opinion 😬

FanSpamTastic · 09/02/2025 13:19

Mine is onto the ground and I have a raised bed inside for salad leaves - the rest is covered with weed membrane and shingle with slabs laid down the middle as a kind of path.

My Greenhouse is as your DH's vision.

Path up the middle. Workbench all along one side. Earth planting on the other side for salad/veg/toms/chilis/peppers etc.

I grow toms in large pots but they are open to the earth. So the pot has the bottom cut off which contains the plants but means the roots go deeper down (into the earth). It has a water tap, power and also is subdivided so there is an inner door to a smaller section.

Used to.

Path up the middle. Workbench at the end of the path.

Beds either side of the path.

I really want one, but am scared of it staying put in a storm! What's your experiences, and how best to site them to keep on the ground lol.😊

If I did brave it, I think I'd have to have ground earth on one side and pots/growing medium on the other, with a bit of a work surface for filling pots.

My late mother had one for a while, and when she got frail, the greenhouse was used for drying clothes.

PuddleintheOcean · 09/02/2025 13:34

Ooo interesting. A bit of both ways but it seems DHs vision is slightly more the norm.

Damn!

We haven't yet reached an agreement on what we're going for. This is our first greenhouse so complete novices here

Mine has a path up the middle, and soil beds around the path. I have some folding trestle workbenches that I put in and take out as required, mostly used for growing seeds and seedlings and taken out as the tomato plants etc get planted into the soil. This works for us, but it depends on how you want to utilise your greenhouse.

We've had it for decades, and never had a problem with storms, but it is securely fixed to the base and we're not in an exposed spot.

Ferrazzuoli · 09/02/2025 13:45

The only greenhouse I know is my grandma's. Path up the middle, beds both sides, no workbench.

SweetLathyrus · 09/02/2025 13:46

Mine is 6x6 - wish I'd gone larger, soil in a raised bed to the left - most recently used for cucumbers and tomatoes. Then shingle with a work bench to the right and in the middle at the back a shelving unit for seed trays.

SweetLathyrus · 09/02/2025 13:48

Completely slabbed or concreted may be easier to clean, but having a growing bed will reduce watering and maintain humidity so less chance of red spider mite.

olderbutwiser · 09/02/2025 13:51

Both my greenhouses are predominantly for growing tomatoes (and the odd chili and cucumber).

At home - path in middle, staging on one side, earth on the other side. I grow my tomatoes in big bottomless pots on the soil side so they can get their feet down to something with a bit of an ecosystem.

On the staging I have a heated bed and a grow light.

At allotment - soil on all three sides, plants grown directly in the soil. Can’t be doing with growbags, bought compost down there, seems unnatural.

olderbutwiser · 09/02/2025 13:53

What are you planning on using it for?

Decafflatteplease · 09/02/2025 13:53

We lost ours in a storm 😭 but it was paving slabs inside. Loved it my little oasis of calm!

BestStoredInAFridge · 09/02/2025 13:55

You see both but your husband's way is preferable IMO and allows for more options. Also much better if you don't have an irrigation system as pots will need more watering than plants in the ground.

fluffiphlox · 09/02/2025 13:57

Ours is as your husband suggests.

BatchCookBabe · 09/02/2025 13:59

No.

TheHorticulturalHussy · 09/02/2025 14:04

Bare earth inside, weed membrane down the middle as a path. Everything planted directly into the ground (pots and growbags will dry out too quickly in the heat) topped up with contents of compost bins in February/March.
My greenhouse is at the top of a very steep garden and is screwed into heavy sleepers on all 4 sides to prevent it becoming airborne and terrifying the neighbouring field of sheep in high winds.
If you can, buy one that's sufficiently robust to support hanging baskets for eg. strawberries and tomatoes to maximise growing space. I say that with the benefit of hindsight, I wish that I had done it 😐

BigDahliaFan · 09/02/2025 14:07

Mine is slabbed as there was no alternative. It’s fine I grow tomatoes in pots and have staging on one side for herbs and overwintering tender stuff.
D.
friends have earth and the most gorgeous vine and apricot tree landed into the ground. Every so often they dig out the soil mostly and refresh it…

bluegreygreen · 09/02/2025 14:57

Mine is on slabs simply because the paved area was the only place I had for it (small garden).

My dream is what your DH wants ...
