I'm just wondering how they will put me in, I don't think I could cope with my head first.

It will be your head first

Chocaholic1216 · 08/02/2025 14:54

Head first when I had mine done

Gardenlover121 · 08/02/2025 14:54

Head first

Head first.
youll likley have a contraption placed ver your head (coil) but it will have a mirror so that you can see out. Should be relatively short but very noisy. You'll be given ear plugs and head phones and an alarm to press if you need anyone.

LIZS · 08/02/2025 14:55

Head. You will only be partly in the tunnel.

TheLurpackYears · 08/02/2025 15:00

I went in head first. I was expected to wear headphones with the radio playing, think they tuned it to radio 2 so I didn't have to posted to Pulse Fm and hulk out of there

CallingOccupantsOfInterplanetaryCraft · 08/02/2025 15:04

Head first - but do ask for the mirror thing and bring earplugs if you're noise sensitive. I find it helps that I can see out the end! If it's just your neck you won't be in there for very long. You'll be fine - they seem scarier than they actually are and you have a button to press if you want out.

CerealPosterHere · 08/02/2025 15:06

Head first. It’s honestly fine, I had another last month. I quite like them and have a snooze. You shouldn’t be too far in so will probably be able to see the room still if you look towards your feet. I didn’t have a mirror, wasn’t offered one.

Mriscan · 08/02/2025 15:09

I've had two before on my middle.
So head first but not right down the end then?
So my shoulders maybe out?

Head first but you're not completely enclosed. You can listen to music or a podcast while you're having it done too. It's manageable.

Not that high up no. For me it was more like waist level.

PaintDecisions · 08/02/2025 15:11

Head first, and in to your knees in my experience.

I have to have diazepam for the MRI tube...

saraclara · 08/02/2025 15:13

Give the department a call if you're claustrophobic. I did for my last neck MRI and they were really helpful. They have three or four machines and apparently one is more 'open' than the other, so she swapped the one I was booked for, to the more open one. It was a vastly less stressful experience.

Hopefully your hospital might be able to take reassure you.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 08/02/2025 15:13

Head first. Then the rest of you will go in.

I would rather gargle with ground glass than go in an MRI machine. (Claustrophobic.)

Sorry @Mriscan I don't envy you at all!

IKnowAristotle · 08/02/2025 15:17

I had two mris on my neck/head and went in feet first.

Mriscan · 08/02/2025 15:19

I found it hard when I had to do my middle and I asked them to keep me up to date with how long it would be for instance, nearly there, 5 mins left and they didn't.
They didn't speak English very well to be honest and I thought I had to have the dye because it said that in the letter and I didn't and the man didn't understand me

Good idea to ring ahead and try and sort it before.

Headfirst.

Mriscan · 08/02/2025 15:20

@IKnowAristotle interesting, maybe they can do both ways?

OP posts:
saraclara · 08/02/2025 16:44

I've had three and they were all head first.

But there are new types of machines coming out all the time, so who knows? My first one was the original long tube which I barely managed to handle. The second one was a tad wider and higher and I was only put half way in. The third was the doughnut shaped one, and that was SO much better.

WetBandits · 08/02/2025 16:51

As PPs have said, it’s head first. I’ve had several MRI scans and have never seen the inside of the machine because I shut my eyes before I go into the tunnel and don’t reopen them until I’m out as I know I’d panic in there otherwise!

Lovemybunnies · 08/02/2025 16:56

I watched a you tube video of a child having a brain MRI and he was so brave and calm I just thought if he can do it I can do it too and I kept him in my mind. I was fine.

When I had my first meltdown in an MRI (not the best way to find out you're claustrophobic!), my mate was being treated for a fast growing brain tumour and having crazy numbers of MRIs every month alongside all his many treatments. He laughed himself silly at me when I told him how it went and I agreed he had far the worse end of experiences (but I'm still claustrophobic!) 😂. At least he waa amused by it!

SquirrelyWirrally · 08/02/2025 17:10

Head first. Best thing is to close your eyes and count / do deep breathing exercises to keep you calm. I had a little cry half way through mine but managed to keep still to keep the images clear

delvan · 08/02/2025 17:15

I was an inpatient and refused to have the MRI unless they gave me DRUGS. I shouldn't have had to explain, but when they demurred, I pointed out that if I had a freaker and they had to pull me out, that's a waste of MRI time, technicians and all the rest of it. Yes I was so claustrophobic that I nearly screamed this at them. They prescribed some sort of valium like drug and it was fine then. Floated in and floated out. I still had moments when I felt a touch of panic, but was able to ride it out. I couldn't have done that without the drugs.

I also used a black eye mask to stop my eyes from opening and seeing the tunnel. That worked great.

Newdoggo · 08/02/2025 17:25

Had one this week, head first - I didn't ask how long as it would probably stress me more, couldn't see the room, voice kept saying '4 minutes of next scan'etc... I felt a need to cough and obviously got an itchy nose as soon as I went in ffs
