Help me save dress that reeks of piss

I know I brought this on myself for not being careful. I washed a soiled pee mat, I used disinfectant laundry liquid and powder, it smelled clean so I thought it would then be fine to wash a merino wool dress on the wool setting, it’s my most expensive dress and worth £200, and I don’t have many clothes. I have just washed it and it reeks of piss, I hate myself right now. I’d never washed the dress before it doesn’t retain odours but I had to because I spilled tomato on it

Dry it as normal then air it outside in an open window, Clean the washing machine and rewash the dress if needed as drying and airing.

I regret putting it in the machine in the first place, it’s gone all fuzzy, I think this dress might be ruined, I’ll put it outside and wash again if needed, this serves me right

Going forward anything with urine soak in cold water, then a cold wash. I’d rinse dress again in sink for a good while then hang outside as suggested. Just see your last post. If you hand wash/rinse then drip dry outside it might save it.

Pure wool can smell odd when wet so let it dry thoroughly and see how it is then.

When washing anything with urine on it, add 100mls of white vinegar to the actual wash, in the drum, as well a the detergent.

I'll be honest, I would never put a merino wool dress in a washing machine. But done is done, so try soaking the dress in a soft wool soap with the white vinegar and gently agitate, before squeezing out and rinsing. Don't twist the fabric, squeeze it.

Give it a spritz with white vinegar and leave it to dry

Hang it up in the bathroom? The intermittently steamy environment has removed smells from clothes for me. It takes time though.
Suede coat that had mildew smell, another suede coat that basically smelled like a cow to the extent that unwearable.
Well worth a try if you don't want to wash it again

Agree with this, give it time. I washed an expensive sheepskin 'do not wash at all' cushion cover in the machine because it was either that or throw it out. It STANK when it came out of the wash but once it was fully dry and aired outside it's absolutely fine.

Pinkpillow7 · 08/02/2025 16:09

Air it outside

Buy some wool wash and hand wash it in the sink. Eucalan Delicate Wash Wool Soak Jasmine, smells divine.

ApolloandDaphne · 08/02/2025 16:48

Wool stinks like pee when it's wet. It will be fine once it is dry.

TiredArse · 08/02/2025 16:48

Are you sure it’s not just a wet wool smell?
