How bad are your unread work emails?

How bad are your unread work emails and how long have you worked there?
for reference I had 1700 unread emails this morning. After a couple of hours I have cut it down to 845. Still got a way to go. I have worked there 3 yrs.

What have you been doing for the last 3 years, other than avoiding emails 😂

I have an excellent reputation at work because I read and action every email timely! What is it that you do? Hopefully nothing that requires an email!

EarlierDistraction · 08/02/2025 10:50

Do you get a lot of junk ones? I delete about half mine without reading but I do clear them every morning and read the rest. My personal ones on the other hand are out of control, perhaps because I mainly read them on my phone instead of sitting down to specifically sorting them every day.

AuntieDolly · 08/02/2025 10:50

Who are they from? That's bonkers. Do a search on 'unsubscribe' and delete them without reading 😆

Elfie23 · 08/02/2025 10:52

I'm around the 2000 mark.
I've read them but most are things I've been copied into. They don't go to read once I've clicked on them, I need to actually change it to read.
I'm an email hoarder - never know when you might need them!
Been employed there for 4 years x

Rosecoffeecup · 08/02/2025 10:55

I left my last job with about 1500 unread. The volume of nonsense I'd be copied in to was absolutely astounding.

Fastingandhungry · 08/02/2025 10:55

None, I have to read all my emails and sort out each day and deal with or allocate as they come in.

OhamIreally · 08/02/2025 10:56

1300 unread I've been there 10 months. I read and file every day but just get copied into so much.

I have a good reputation and won an award recently but there is just so much it's relentless.

A lot of it is automated reports or long email threads where I just read the last one. I don't delete anything but now I think about it I could read the last and delete the rest!

JimHalpertsWife · 08/02/2025 10:57

If I get copied onto a chat, I delete the previous thread on it - so only kept the most recent one, as it has all the prior chat below it.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 08/02/2025 10:58

0 😬 I'm very type A and cannot let them build up, my eye starts twitching even if it's junk/newsletters! First and last job every day for me is to clear it.

lemongrizzly · 08/02/2025 11:02

Zero. I can’t stand having unread emails. If they need action, I flag them and keep them in the inbox. I have a folder for non-urgent things I want to read at some point. A lot gets deleted. I archive anything I’ve dealt with and need to keep.

I also have zero unread personal emails. If I’m not going to read or answer them immediately I snooze them until a later date.

I can’t stand having unread emails, it makes me feel ill. I’m not sure this is entirely healthy but I do think my system works quite well.

lemongrizzly · 08/02/2025 11:03

On the other hand I saw someone with over 900 when they screen shared on a call this week. I felt like Monica in Friends when she goes over and asks to clean that woman’s filthy apartment - I really wanted to just go and sort it out for them.

HelpMeGetThrough · 08/02/2025 11:08

0 unread emails and have worked there 14 years.

When I get back off leave any emails over a week old that I've been CC'd into are not read and just deleted. If it was that important, they can email me again.

DragonfliesAboveYourBed · 08/02/2025 11:10

None. But at the end of each day I highlight any I don't need, mark as read, and delete. My inbox only has about 5 emails total at the moment. Everything else is filed or snoozed, or deleted. Drives me mad otherwise.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 08/02/2025 11:14

Zero.

Read as they come in, and flag ones that I can't immediately action. Takes a maximum of five minutes, and no one has ever had to chase me for something because I didn't read it.

Andsoitbeganagain · 08/02/2025 11:16

16 years - 8500 unread emails. In my defence, I'm ccd into dozens of emails everyday for oversight and 9/10 don't require me to do anything. It's annoying, but that's the micro management culture we live in.

RosieLeaLovesTea · 08/02/2025 11:17

I work in a large organisation and I get ccd in a lot or people reply to everyone and there are many email replies. I do action the ones I need to.

6370 unread currently in inbox just from the past 12 months. I get lots of emails.

WillYouDoTheFandango · 08/02/2025 11:20

I have 9000 unread in my main inbox and many many thousands in filtered sub folders.

I oversee a series of account teams and may need to jump in to support one of the teams at any point. I flick through for anything to me or that requires me to action but otherwise they have to just stay there. I probably get ~500 a day and have been at the same place for 10 years.

Oblomov25 · 08/02/2025 11:23

None, I've always read all emails, deleted some, unsubscribed, dealt with, so always zero unread.

Theresacatinmykitchenwhatamigonnado · 08/02/2025 11:24

I empty my junk folder weekly - I block lots of agencies and delete en masse, I don't read any of those.
Other emails - I cast an eye over every single one I receive. If it's irrelevant, I delete, if I need to know but don't need to respond I file it and if it's anything to do with me, I respond accordingly.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 08/02/2025 11:26

I have 0 unread emails! How are you functioning?!

foreverbasil · 08/02/2025 11:26

Just, read file or delete. No need to hoard them

Floralnomad · 08/02/2025 11:29

How do you know if something is / was important if you’ve not looked at them , I really can’t see how you are able to do an efficient job with loads of unread emails . Bizarre .

I have a rule set up that automatically marks all CC'd emails as read and files them, also changes the colour of the subject line so it's obvious without reading them that I'm just CC'd.

I have lots of rules set up, including a couple for specific people who are just a pain in the arse and feel the need to email me constant stream of consciousness type updates that are completely unnecessary.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 08/02/2025 11:32

I feel your pain. NHS employee here with mixed management/clinical duties so clinical duties often bleed over into management time. Not much room for emails some days.
