IPL for rosacea/ocular rosacea

Currently taking antibiotics for rosacea. Have had it for 20 years. Am late 40s now and it’s seemed to have kicked up again, I’m assuming with menopause. And is now also affecting and inflaming my eyes.

For me rosacea is flushing which goes a real deep red and stays red but no pustules/pimples (yet). Mainly on the cheeks but actually I think it’s slightly nose and chin now too. I’m already haggered and this is making me feel and look even worse.

Am considering IPL but wanted to hear from others.

I've had IPL for rosacea. It came back again after a year or so. I thought I'd kicked it, but, it might just be me.

zippyswife · 08/02/2025 13:55

@FuckMeUpFlorida sorry to hear that- was it as severe? Did you have more treatments when it returned? I’m assuming it won’t rid me of it forever but it might be easier to get on top of it and then have more as and when needed.

I don't as just looking it it his too!

My women's healTH GP gently pointed out I most likely had rosacea. I was embarrassed but acknowledged I barely recognise the little red face that looks back at me in the mirror.

She put me on soolantra which has worked wonders, but I have smaller red mark damage and she said a few rounds of IPL would clear all that up.

I am also interested to hear other people's experiences Smile

I think it must be. I've had multiple rounds of antibiotics and creams like soolantra, but I come back to the red patches on my face. I could do with a second round of IPL to just see if it makes a permanent difference.

Chewbecca · 08/02/2025 14:04

Have you tried Soolantra from the Drs yet? I would definitely try that before IPL.

zippyswife · 08/02/2025 14:41

I’m on doxycycline for rosacea and ocular rosacea. I’m 5 weeks in with no improvement but think it takes a while.

Does soolantra work if it’s just redness/flushing and not actual pustules? I remember reading about the wonders of soolantra on here some time ago. Can a GP prescribe it?

I use Rosalique. The make up is great and I’ve recently started using the night cream which I think is making a positive difference.

ConstanceMartensCat · 08/02/2025 14:56

Soolantra worked wonders for me - mine is completely gone now. IPL helped but soolantra saw it off for good. There are online pharmacies that will ‘prescribe’ it.

CherryRipe1 · 08/02/2025 14:57

I'm not sure of your specific type of rosacea but I've read that the demodex mites can cause it & it might be worth having skin analysis & a specific anti mite protocol? Just a thought.

CherryRipe1 · 08/02/2025 14:58

Maybe that's what soolantra is, it so ignore my twaddle!

yes and yes!

I had really bad rosacea years ago - redness and pustules. IPL course and long term lymecycline worked wonders, it was amazing for me.

zippyswife · 08/02/2025 19:44

Thanks all. This gives some hope.

I've been lucky in ways as had it so badly 20 years ago and got on top of it after 5 years and it stayed fairly dormant for another 15. Just need to kick it again.

I am late to this thread but wanted to share in case it helps someone. I have ocular rosacea - I flush easily and for the last few years have noticed my eyes were getting progressively redder. I also have horrific burning, itching and a gritty feeling in my eyes along with dry eyes caused by MGD.

2 years ago I had a treatment called Lipiflow which squeezes all your oil out of your meibomian glands using heat and manual compression by a machine and it was pretty helpful- lasted about 2 years but it didnt correct the redness. Then as soon as March this year started, my eyes flared up again. So, yesterday I had a private appointment with a consultant ophthalmologist. He confirmed I have OR and suggested IPL. I had the first treatment yesterday- he put eye covers over my eyes and flashed this very hot red light on my inner eyelids- top and bottom. Then he manually squeezed my eyelids with what looked like tweezers which was a bit painful but the relief was incredible- I literally felt oil pouring out of my eyes and down my cheeks. It felt absolutely blissful.

For the rest of yesterday, my eyelids felt mildly sunburnt, were a tiny bit puffy and felt just as uncomfortable as usual.

Today however, has been completely different - my eyes look normal again, the whites look whiter, and they feel the most comfortable they've been in months. He has told me that OR is a chronic condition, and therefore nothing will "cure" it permanently. However, I am to have a total of 4 IPL treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart and then he recommended a maintenance treatment every year thereafter. If the improvement I have seen after just one is anything to go by, I am really, really hopeful that after 4 I will see a big improvement.

He told me that OR is caused by an inflammatory response whereby the body creates excessive tiny blood vessels in your eyes called Telangiectasia. These arent healthy blood vessels- they are dilated, fragile and leaky and irritate the nerves in your eyes causing a release of histamines, prostaglandins and cytokines. This is what causes the burning and itching and redness. IPL destroys these unhealthy blood vessels and therefore reduces the associated inflammation. Obviously, everyone is different and our bodies all work in different ways and this is still early days for me but the difference it has made in only one day is pretty astonishing so I hope this gives someone hope.

The only bugger is the expense - it really annoys me that this isnt available under NHS as it really affects your quality of life so much.

I’ve got roseacea and I’ve found the zo skincare regime works really well. I had to buy it from a private dermatologist- that and factor 50 spf

This is really interesting. Thank you for posting. Where did you go and what was the cost? I paid to see a consultant ophthalmologist who suggested hot compress and massage but I’m not sure it’s improved at all and if anything I’m concerned it has made my rosacea worse and my eyes redder.
Sounds like you’ve had a great result! Hope it stays that way!
