Electric hot water bottles - anybody got one?

Wondering if anyone has one and would you recommend it (and any particular brand). I've only just heard that such a thing exists and they sound a lot safer for some of my older relatives than traditional ones. We've tried SnuggleSafe discs (they're meant for pets!) which work well to warm the bed up, but they're not the sort of thing they could put against a sore back. Thanks

I bought my daughter one, she says it’s great and is buying one for her daughter!

the one o bought has like a muffin effect so you can put your hands in

Cocolapew · 07/02/2025 23:26

I got my mum a Carmen one from Amazon, I think it was about £15. It's really good, heats up in 15- 20 minutes and has the hand warmer bit too.

JellyTotsAreYum · 07/02/2025 23:28

They sound good - are they soft enough to cuddle?

I've never heard of an electric hot water bottle- no.

What are you wanting for your relative? Something to heat up their bed or to heat a specific part of their body?

I bought MIL an infared heat pad which she can drape or strap over her shoulder to help arthritic pain. It can also be held around her back/waist.

If its to heat a bed, an electric blanket on a timer to take the cold edge off is great, but not to be left on all night.

Pixiedust1234 · 07/02/2025 23:37

If they want to use it on their backs then that bottle won't be any good as it would burst under too much pressure, similar to a normal bottle. Either get then a heated blanket if they have a lot of painful areas or go for this one.

My mum in particular complains of a cold back and sometimes she just likes to cuddle a hot water bottle. I've got her a microwave bean bag instead, but it doesn't seem to hold the heat very long.

Thanks for the replies - somethings to think about

Mine is heating up as I sit here, ready to take to bed to keep my chilly toes warm through the night! It has a plush cover, very soft. I won't be using a water filled bottle again, this is very safe, and being rechargeable has no cord attached once it's hot. Brilliant invention.

I got mine from Amazon, it cost about £20.

Edited to add, it usually retains heat until morning, so very nice to cuddle in bed.

DilemmaDelilah · 08/02/2025 09:44

I do. I love it! It keeps warm too.
BUT - it's not very big.
It is too hot at the start to put directly against me
It is full of liquid so I wouldn't put it anywhere where it would have a lot of pressure against it.

Ideally I would like one which is bigger, or maybe just a longer rectangle rather than a near square. And it would be great if you could get covers for them to put on after they have heated. Mine is one which has a muff bit on one side, but it doesn't cover all the very hot side bits.

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/02/2025 10:59

@DilemmaDelilah I agree they seem a bit small, but they are quite heavy so wonder if a bigger one would be too heavy for eg putting on tummy lying down. Mine seems to have a gel in it rather than liquid, so hopefully not as bad as water. Recently I've had a couple of nearly-new traditional bottles spring a leak. My old ones used to last for years!
Agree it would be nice to have a cover, maybe a standard hot water bottle cover would do? A bit loose but would do the job.

JC03745 · 08/02/2025 12:12

This is what I bought MIL. Its an infared heat bad, not a hot water bottle though.

Thanks to all who replied. I think it's not really suitable for what I wanted (but I may get one for myself!) - I think a m/w beanbag with a heat pad of some sort to supplement is what I think will work best for my "oldies"

I’m not sure if you’re still looking, but have you seen the Stoov ones? They sound like what you need as they can go against the back and can be cuddled without needing to be plugged in.

Thanks - that's more what I wanted - just a bit too expensive for me :) She's using a wheat bag which she can cuddle atm.

These look quite good but I need one to stay hot for longer than four hours as my knees and hips tend to start hurting around 3 in the morning and I put my hot water bottle on them to ease the pain so I can sleep. I am starting to worry about hot water leaks though.

marly2 · 14/03/2025 22:14

I really wouldn’t. I had a nasty burn from a hot water bottle so got one of these electric plug-in ones which was filled with liquid and could be used without the lead once charged. When I phoned the company to ask about what temperature the liquid was heated to, it was above the temperature that would burn skin in the event of a leak. I sent it back and have gone with ‘hotties’ instead. (I was told by the local hospital that they have been dealing with an increase in burns from liquid filled/hot water bottles since the cost of heating homes has gone up.)

Borborygmus · 14/03/2025 22:31

We have one of the Aldi ones, which is supposed to heat up to 70°C. It then feels just warm rather than hot, though I appreciate it would burn you if it were to leak. I'd hazard a guess that most regular hot water bottles start off hotter than that.

One annoyance is that once heated up to 70°C it won't let you recharge it until the temperature drops to 50°C.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 14/03/2025 22:33

I would get an electric blanket.

I look forward to getting into bed now in the winter.

WhereAreWeNow · 14/03/2025 22:35

They had the Carmen one in my local Lidl this week. I'd never seen one before. It looks good. I love hot water bottles.

RaininSummer · 15/03/2025 08:34

I have just ordered one for me and one for mum for mother's day but am a bit put off by the fact that so many reviews say the bottles pack up very quicky but after 30 days, the venders don't seem to care.

Linda199 · 08/04/2025 10:55

Bought an electric hot water bottle for a friend that was going into labour from https://snuggtemp.com.au/ and she absolutely loved it, helped her a lot. If you get one, get one that has a strap like these guys. She strapped it to target her lower back and helped ease some of the pain.
