Recovery post Septum surgery?

Hi,

I went to see my ENT consultant today who is saying he is going to refer me for septum surgery.

I've had issues with breathing and my nose in general since I was 12/13 years old.

As the years have gone by the issues have worsened and although it might not fix all of the problems with my nose, I'll be happy to at least be able to breathe somewhat better.

I have a 14 month old and was wondering what the recovery is like? Can I still care for her or would I need to rely on extended family to help? My partner is self employed and would need to work to keep things ticking over whilst I'm off. He would obviously help where he can but we cannot afford for him to take the whole two months off.

Also, does it make your nose look smaller at all? Obviously I know this isn't the aim of the surgery but would be a nice bonus. The consultant did mention something about straightening the middle out and making things go more inward to create space to breathe?

Thanks

I've had septum surgery to help with breathing. I would arrange help if you have a toddler. For mine I had some strongish anti inflammatories and painkillers which knocked me out a bit so was in bed a lot. I couldn't have looked after a child. Maybe yours might be different but better to get help just in case, at least for the first few days. I see you've mentioned two months which seems rather long.
It wasn't a fun operation but it felt amazing to breathe properly again. My nose didn't really look different after.

I had mine done 20 years ago, but also had surgery on my sinuses and polyps removed at the same time. From what I remember, it was only a few days recovery and the main issue was I was vomiting, but was otherwise ok.

Mine didn't alter my nose size/shape but it did mean I could breathe through my nose/ blow my nose properly, which I'd never been able to do pre surgery. I'm glad I had it done.

Mine was a long time ago (30 years?), but I wasn't allowed to bend down/over for about 2 weeks, so looking after a young child would have been very difficult.

I think the reasoning was to prevent a nose bleed starting. Is there any way you can contact the Consultant (or their Secretary) to ask what their post operation advice will be?

Sorry I meant two weeks not two months! @NerdyBird thank you for your response. I'm glad it helped with your breathing. I can't wait to breathe better too. I've had this issue for so long now and I'm fed up of it x

@FortunaMajor thank you for your response. I'm glad to hear it helped with your breathing... I can't wait to hopefully be able to breathe through my nose. I've never really been able to tbh so I'm excited to see what that might feel like!

@LeoLeo2 not sure how I would get in touch with the secretary. Might have to call the main hospital and ask to be transferred to ENT then ask to be transferred again. Thank you
