Are there people under 50 who regularly read a newspaper

Cuffi · 06/02/2025 12:42

I have not read a newspaper in years. News is reported as it happens. Sometimes when the reporter has bare bones information.

Just dip into the news on internet.

Plus newspapers are so expensive. To buy a national newspaper every day plus the local newspaper costs £22 a week. My local rag is £2 a day and sometimes the headlines was online 2-3 days ago.

I say in ten years time there won’t be any newspapers

I am under 50 and I love reading on paper! It's a big pleasure to me to sit down and read it, it's completely different to reading online. Reading online is basically just skimming in my case, I just can't focus the same way. My kids love reading the newspaper as well!
Do posters who read the news online have subscriptions?

catin8oots · 06/02/2025 18:37

I browse several newspapers every day. On my phone.

oakleaffy · 06/02/2025 18:47

Metro is read a lot as it’s free
Waitrose used to give a free paper if one spent£10 ( easy to do!)
Broadsheets are very expensive now.

I get the FT every weekend, and sometimes the Sunday Times or Observer too. I'll flick through the Telegraph in the library if I happen to be walking past too. I'm early thirties.

I’m late 40s and get the paper delivered daily Mon - Sat. I drink it with my morning tea in bed before I get up for the day.

It’s a real ritual for me and one I am reluctant to give up.

I love all the sections of the Sunday paper and take my time reading them throughout the week. Reading books on KIndle is one thing (I do read alot on my Kindle too) but a proper sized (not the travel size) magazine/paper isn't the same experience online imo. I love the whole spreading out and ritual of a lazy morning tea/coffee with music in the background - it makes me appreciate the tranquility and I can literally feel myself decompress/relax. I actually used some of the magazine pages for wrapping small presents when I ran out of Xmas wrap. I have quite a large pile of travel sections to go through again for holiday inspiration. It's definitely not the same reading them online.

I'm 46 and we subscribe to The Times and get a paper copy. I want the children to see us reading and for them to be informes too.

TerroristToddler · 06/02/2025 19:04

I subscribe to two digital versions of main newspapers which I read on my laptop or iPad daily. Does that count?

TerroristToddler · 06/02/2025 19:04

Oh should add im 35

In the village where I spent my teen years. I was a paper girl. On Sundays, one man ordered Sunday Times, Sunday Telegraph, Independent on Sunday, Observer and Sunday Express! The lad who did the morning round said he had 6 papers - Times, Telegraph, Guardian, FT, Racing Post and Independent. How did he ever get time to do anything else but read???

The tips he gave me and the lad were very generous.

Yes I read the Times every day and Times and Guardian (or ST and Observer) at the weekend. Usually digital versions during the week and physical at the weekend.

BobnLen · 06/02/2025 20:25

The local paper is free to read on PressReader with your library card, ours is anyway

Xiaoxiong · 06/02/2025 20:38

I read the Times and the FT daily, sometimes get the Observer on the weekends. Also get Private Eye.

Sinkintotheswamp · 06/02/2025 20:41

I'm 50 and get a weekend paper delivered. As a precious posters said, it forces me to read articles that I probably wouldn't click on.

I also get a weekly local paper. Mostly to see who's passed away and the slightly bonkers letters page.

StMarie4me · 06/02/2025 20:51

I'm 62, used to be a newsagent.

Haven't read a newspaper for at least 15 years!

Airpowercper · 06/02/2025 21:04

Yes.

StormingNorman · 06/02/2025 21:07

Me. Only on a Sunday though.

Me. I have it delivered every day. I love it, it’s like getting a little gift. It’s expensive but not as much as you’ve quoted. Think I pay £60 a month for a broadsheet. Every year they try and out it up, every year I ting and say I’ll cancel and they keep the same price.

I do it because I like to stay informed, I don’t watch the news and I like the kids to see me reading.

We do the same. It means we talk about the news with the kids every day which I think is very good for them. They love looking at the pictures and my 6yo asks us to explain the cartoon every day. It also means they see us reading - otherwise we would be reading our news on our phones and I'm trying to keep those away as much as possible when they're around.

MermaidMummy06 · 06/02/2025 21:15

I used to love the newspaper. Especially the Sunday one.

I don't bother anymore as they're rubbish AND I say this being able to access it free online (via library). On the occasion I do flick through the copy at work, I find it's all generic cut & paste from online, with maybe a couple of local articles. The Sunday one (can read online for free via our library) is now all celebrities & fluff & not issues worth my time.

LostittoBostik · 06/02/2025 21:16

Yes

Needmorelego · 06/02/2025 12:48

I see a lot of people on public transport reading the Metro - but probably because it's free.

The Metro is owned by Rupert Murdoch, just in case anyone would normally avoid reading his papers (DM, etc).

irregularegular · 06/02/2025 21:17

We get a newspaper (or two) delivered every day. I'm only just over 50...I much prefer reading on paper. I do look at online news too, but tend not to read long articles that way.

Girasole02 · 06/02/2025 21:17

Get my news online. Will buy a physical copy for National Trust vouchers etc. Read Metro when on public transport. Would rather spend my money on other things as newspapers just end up in the recycling.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 06/02/2025 21:20

I don't. I just get the headlines off the internet. I'm "just under" 50. I can't be arsed with newspapers, they just seem a waste of resources and are full of bloody adverts.
