Feeding Aqua Dragons whilst on holiday

DD has Aqua Dragons (think they are the same as other brands e.g. Sea Monkeys). We are going away for 5/6 days. I don't want them to starve. Not sure whether to:

  • Feed them normally just before going and on our return and they will be fine.
  • Add more food. Apparently over-feeding is bad but maybe ok as a one-off
  • Is there any sort of slow release feed like you get for goldfish? I've tried to search online but not got very far
  • Get someone to feed them. This is not ideal and I'd rather avoid

This feels over invested for very small creatures, but I will feel guilty if we kill them!

I have no advice for you but, just to say, we left our sons for a week (fed them normally before we went) and when we came home there was just one very fat one left!

Our sons Sea Monkeys - not our sons!!😀

I had to Google as I wasn't sure I was remembering correctly but don't only feed sea monkeys once a week anyway??

Google agrees with me

Are they fish or water insects ? We used to feed fish with a slow release cube we got from the aquatic shop also pet shops sell them , I can't remember brands sorry but that might work.

Haha that would be interesting to explain to DD!

We have Aqua Dragons (not entirely sure if they are different, or just different brands). The advice is to feed every 2-3 days unless the water is cloudy which means there is still food. Maybe we could leave them a week, especially if we added extra food before going.

Apparently crustaceans according to Google. I wondered about those cubes, but whether they are just for fish?

This is a cunning plan! The water looks slightly greenish so DD might already be inadvertently doing this.

I didn't see your follow-up! But your first post made me laugh and I really needed it this morning!

If the water has build up she might be over feeding them anyway.

You might be able to get something.

whompingwillo · 06/02/2025 11:15

Don’t add extra food, this will turn water green. Just feed normally before you go and when you get back

I think she might be slightly. It's not green exactly but doesn't look as clear as before, so maybe they need less food and we can feed them before/after. Will just hope they don't end up with only one left!

They're a species of brine shrimp (artemia salinas)

I don't think slow feeder cubes would be suitable - it's been a while since I raised them but if I was feeding algae wafers I had to crush them. I used to feed mine once a day so I really don't think they can be left for a week without food!

Thank you, that's useful. I am happy to make plans for someone to feed them if needed. I just wasn't sure if I was being OTT.
