Nope.

Sedation is the exception in a lot of Trusts, and only normally for nervous patients.

Most of the time the best they will offer is a bit of numbing spray and then nasal insertion. I prefer standard oral because it means I can be in and out in 15 minutes with no faffing about.

I asked for sedation (for documented reasons) & was denied it. I found the numbing spray insufficient & the procedurevery difficult. My exH had the same procedure the week after & was given sedation at his request.

HRTQueen · 06/02/2025 13:47

yes and i opted for no sedation and just the numbing spray

all done very quickly you really do not have time to think too much about what is happening, the staff were great

was uncomfortable but not painful

Doloresparton · 06/02/2025 13:47

Have the sedation.
I have a friend who is the calmest person I know and she totally regretted not having sedation.

I had sedation, no memory of the procedure at all.

Leilanii · 06/02/2025 13:49

I would always have sedation. My poor friend had an endoscopy without sedation (bullied into it by staff) and she cried about the experience for weeks.

The NHS staff try to force people not to have sedation so that they can get them out more quickly. So advocate for yourself.

My sister dropped me off.

No sedation but a numbing spray.

I felt a "click" when they snipped off the stomach wall sample.

I was out and downstairs in the canteen before my sister had reached the head of the queue!

Dead easy.

I've had two, no sedation as I dont like needles and the feeling of sedation. Both times were fine, the second one I kind of enjoyed. You just feel a bit of pressure on the back of the throat, just remember to relax. The two people who went in before me were sedated and both gagged really bad.

I8toys · 06/02/2025 18:27

Twice without sedation. Its not pleasant but I wanted it over and done with with no waiting around after. No issues afterwards.

SnugNightsss · 06/02/2025 20:32

I had one with throat numbing spray. It didn’t hurt but I felt like I couldn’t breath & u felt like I was going to choke. It was horrible & I wished I’d insisted on sedation. The nurse talked me out of it.

Miley1967 · 06/02/2025 20:36

No sedation and it was awful.

Orino · 06/02/2025 20:40

I’ve had it twice. Once sedated and once not. Definitely get sedated. Slightly horrific without for me.

Soontobe60 · 06/02/2025 20:41

I’ve had a nasal one with a numbing spray. It was ok, not at all painful just felt weird as I swallowed the camera but then was ok and liked watching the screen to see it in my oesophagus!

torreli · 06/02/2025 20:43

Have the sedation.

Sinkintotheswamp · 06/02/2025 20:48

I don't remember. I was sedated and had numbing spray.

Same as hysteroscopy (GA) and a colonoscopy (sedated). I want them to do their job and for me to be out of it so I don't mess it up for them.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 06/02/2025 20:51

I had it without sedation and it was fine. I was more scared of the feeling of being sedated!! Obviously it’s never going to be a pleasant experience but I found once you get it swallowed, it’s not too bad. I remember burping all the way through the hospital on my way out!😂😂

I even went for lunch afterwards.

Sedation is common for gastroscopy in England. No-one gets a prize for enduring something that can be deeply unpleasant for patients.

Balloonhearts · 06/02/2025 21:01

Take a mirror. I always find I can control my gag reflex if I see it coming.

Fancytrike · 06/02/2025 21:04

I had it with some sort of sedation (abroad). Honestly the worst bit was the drugs combined with the images of my insides made me laugh uncontrollably and I got told it would all be a lot easier if I stopped laughing. Embarrassing, but not awful. I laughed all the way home too.

researchers3 · 06/02/2025 21:07

I had it with semi sedation. I wouldn't do it without that.

But lots of people do.

tillyandmilly · 06/02/2025 21:11

I have had 2 - one in the NHS - awful no sedation - second one private at the Nuffield - completely different experience- nurse stroking my hair - reassuring me - Spray and sedation even though sedation did not work (never does)! but they were so lovely with me - so tolerable!

HomeworkMonitor · 06/02/2025 21:14

Yeah twice

Once not sedated because I drove there alone and didn't want to wait all afternoon before I could drive again

Once with sedation but needed someone to accompany me / drive

Without sedation, I gagged continuously, and it didn't felt very good. I swore I would never choose that option again. It shouldn't even be an option! Horrible experience

With semi-sedation, it's a breeze. Nobody should complain, and if they do, they should be made to choose non-sedation next time!

Searchingforsunshine · 06/02/2025 21:17

I've had it without sedation, ive just the part past your voicebox that is uncomfortable x

emmetgirl · 06/02/2025 21:22

No sedation. Had a numbing spray on my throat to stop the gag reflex.
It wasn't very pleasant but overall it was ok!
