What happens if a car accident isn't reported within the insurer's specified time period?

We were involved in a minor car incident causing minor paintwork damage to both cars. It was our fault, but the other party said they didn't want to go through insurance, and would contact us about dealing with it privately. They didn't contact us for 10 days, but now say they want to go through insurance. We are both with Admiral which has a general condition saying all accidents must be reported within 48 hours. They didn't meet that deadline, but neither did we.

What is likely to happen if they try to make a claim 10 days after the incident?

The Admiral website says it "could" invalidate the claim and "may" cause the policy to be cancelled. We didn't know this until we checked today. Now we don't know what our next move should be. We have asked the other party for the details that we need to report the incident, but they are not responding. We don't even have their reg number or full name - just a phone number and first name.

Did you sign anything admitting liability?

No, but there was a witness, and the other car was stationary at the time (it was a reverse parking scrape in a tight spot - the other car was parked badly but obviously that's no excuse).

Phone your car insurance tomorrow and log it with them. Even if you don’t know their details it will then be noted in their system.
