Worried about homophobia spreading here from the U.S.

Has anyone else been thinking the same thing?

Having watched the ongoing slew of executive orders on the news with a distant but ever-encroaching sense of dread, today I’ve seen news that the CDC website have removed pages related to HIV and HIV prevention, health disparities amongst LGBT+ youth, and vaccinations for monkeypox. It’s so worrying to see this information being purposefully withheld and our safety so swiftly disregarded. I’m starting to really worry that the UK will follow the US’s trend and that upswing of anti-LGBT rhetoric of the last few years will start having a more tangible impact in the UK.

I’m sure there are charities and grassroots efforts helping tackle such changes but I’m not sure how this kind of social shift is best fought. I’ve been lucky to grow up in a mostly accepting environment but I worry for the next generation of young LGBT people and the atmosphere that seems to be developing.

I hate what's happening in the US, but I don't think it's going to blow over from there. Social attitudes in Western Europe have always been more evolved than in the US because it's a more secular part of the world. The issue is religion - which also explains why there is less tolerance in those parts of Europe where religion holds more sway.

I don't see the tide of secularism being turned any time soon, and a lot of religious movements now are also turning away from the old school anti-gay patriarchal model. Yes, there are extreme evangelical movements, but they're a minority and they have no political power.

This is not to say we should be complacent, but there's no need to panic just yet.

It is up to all of us with more tolerant attitudes to make sure we stand against the racists and homophobes.

People mostly accept the LGB people but the T and Q are the ones who are perceived to have caused many problems in the past few years.

That's still a matter of prejudice though. There aren't hordes of trans people committing terrible crimes and upsetting the social order. And let's face it, a certain political party in the US has made massive political capital out of demonising trans people.

Of course there are plenty of people on MN who like to do the same thing.

It's even transphobic to simply report what some people think now is it? I you wonder why the trans movement has a bad name.

There are indeed charities and other organisations in many countries tackling the recent events.
There is no indication that the UK will follow suit. The government is and continues to be committed to to drive to 2030 with no new HIV cases and recently increased testing for this to more A & E departments. Regarding Mpox this week the NHS announced 12 new vaccination centres covering all regions, including information about symptoms and those most at risk. https://www.england.nhs.uk/2025/02/nhs-opens-new-mpox-vaccination-sites-across-england/

Most of us in the UK are far too sensible to pay any heed to the fuckwittery over there.
