My dd(9) has woken up with bright red eyes is this a dr visit thing?

My dd has been unwell for 3 days, high temp loads of snot , cough - a proper cols or flu. She woke up in the middle of the night complaining her “eyeballs hurt”. The whites are very red there is some gunk - shes also sensitive to light.
I have her with a warm compress on them but tbh conjunctivitis is not something ive ever had to deal with before and im not sure if this is a normal part of a flu/cold virus or if i need to call gp?

any advice would be really appreciated!

They can get it by rubbing snot into their eyes. With the light sensitivity I’d get her seen.

GoldVermillion · 03/02/2025 06:55

Has she had MMR?
If not I would want to know it's not measles.

Bigtom · 03/02/2025 06:56

It could be uveitis. Definitely get her seen asap.

Sunflowervase · 03/02/2025 06:57

Does sound like conjunctivitis. My GP won’t see you for it anymore, you have to call an opticians (GP surgery gave me names who will prescribe) for them to examine and prescribe drops. However, they only prescribe if it’s bacterial conjunctivitis.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 03/02/2025 07:11

I would try to go to a pharmacy. Ideally one which opens onto the street so you don't need to go in. Ask the pharmacist to have a look. Faster and they can prescribe if conjunctivitis. Maybe take some photos with it gunked up too.

Huckyfell · 03/02/2025 07:12

Me and my daughter had exactly the same symptons with this current fluey virus, dr told dd to get over the counter drops.

No, have the 9yr old stand at the door so she doesn't infect all the vulnerable people in the pharmacy. Mum pops in, asks pharmacist to have a look. That's how it works around here with potentially contagious conditions.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/02/2025 08:23

Conjunctivitis is not airborne!

She can go into the pharmacy. However, with the light sensitivity, it could be uveitis/iritis. A phamacist can refer you to an optometrist that treats this under the PEARS scheme (Primary Eyecare Assessment and Referral Service).

You can get it from a pharmacy.

Yes, you can but at £9 for a bottle at the Boots pharmacy I’d rather a prescription for a child. Apparently the drops won’t do anything for viral, only bacterial.

I know all about how chloramphenicol works, thanks. You were saying you have to go to an optician to get it. I was merely pointing out you can go to the pharmacy for it which might be a lot easier. If you can’t afford the prescription fee, then there are schemes where you don’t have to pay but I can’t remember what they are called. Personally, if my child had conjunctivitis (and OP please take advice of the doctors who have posted on here) I’d probably cough up £9 for speed and my child’s comfort.

I don’t know why you’re acting like I’m attacking you? I wasn’t explaining how they work, I was just trying to say there is no point getting drops if it isn’t bacterial (which someone needs to look in to her eye to see) thus potentially wastes money. There is a scheme available if you can’t afford a prescription fee, but my DC is 8. I chose to follow this route and it was quick and easy. No unnecessary discomfort to my child and I didn’t use a GP appointment.
I also didn’t say you had to go to an optician first, I said my GP refers you to there. I was giving my experience, as have other people on this thread.

chelseahealyslips · 03/02/2025 10:29

It sounds like viral conjunctivitis. I just had it alongside a nasty throat infection. The whole of the whites of my eyes were red and inflamed. There was gunk in the mornings but not the rest of the day. It goes away, just bathe her eyes in cooled boiled water and use some irritated eye drops to soothe. And try to get her not to touch them.
My eyes were recovered after about a week.

Bubblegumtatoos · 03/02/2025 10:32

Look up emergency eye care services in your area we have a list and times in our area.

And me, mine.

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 03/02/2025 10:41

That’s great, different things have worked for different people. Hopefully the OP can get something sorted whichever route they choose.
