Anyone around to talk to? I'm in hospital with my mum.

My mums 83. Normally fit and well. She's been experiencing pain like I've never seen. The gp thought it was frozen shoulder when they saw her on Friday. She was prescribed codeine and paracetamol and told to get x-rayed on Monday. She slept sat up in a chair on Saturday night because she couldn't face getting in and out of bed. Sunday she's been so bad that I called 111 and then 999 twice. The ambulance came. Paramedics have given her morphine and gas and air to get her to hospital. It's 3:20am and she's just had an x-Ray. Waiting to see the results with a doctor and just holding her hand while she's struggling with the pain. I can't believe this is frozen shoulder. It's like watching someone struggle though labour. My poor mum. 😔

Your poor mum, hope she gets sorted & comfortable soon x

Thanks. Just posting on here as somewhere to put it down in writing really. My husband's at home with our two children and I've told him to sleep so he can get them up and ready to school in the morning. Friends will all be asleep too.

Hi Starkers

Really sorry to hear that. Glad you called the ambulance though - sounds like you definitely did the right thing.Good on you.

Let’s hope they’ll be able to find out what’s wrong and sort it out.

Sending hugs and a handhold.

Hope you get the results of the x-ray soon and they can give your poor Mum something stronger for her pain. It's horrible watching our parents suffer, you just want to scoop them up and make it all better, just like they did for us when we were young.

Coffeetostart · 03/02/2025 03:38

So sorry for your Mmm, sending hugs. Hope they get her treated soon 🌸🌷🌸

katscamel · 03/02/2025 03:49

Hope your mum starts getting better soon. Friend has a similar thing and starts physio tomorrow...its a long process but both of them will get there.
Watching our parents get older is tough I agree. My 82 year old dad goes in for an elbow replacement today and I'll be on a plane to Australia so not around to help him or my mum.

Thanks for all the kind words. The doctor had just been and shown us the x-Ray. She's got a fracture in her humerus! It's so clear on the X-ray. They're going to give her gas and air and get the cast on. And then investigate how this happened as she's not fallen or anything that we can remember. She tumbled out of bed and lost her bearings one night way before Christmas. It can't have been since then. Osteoporosis has been mentioned. The doc says breaks like this shouldn't happen with no impact. It could be due to something more sinister. I'm not sure what that could be and I don't want to start googling.

I had something like that with my Dad a couple of years ago but in his neck area, he slept in a chair for three weeks because he couldn't bare the pain of lying down. Loads of scans and xrays - no one could see anything. In the end after several different specialists said they had no idea - and each one had to go through all the same questions each time. And a very patronising neurologist who said well it's arthritis because you have some small signs of that. But the pain had some on suddenly over the course of two days - you don't get extreme, almost unbearable arthritis pain from nothing to can't lie down in two days.

In the end a really lovely rheumatologist diagnosed it by a process of elimination as occipital nerve pain and he had a nerve block injection which sorted it out.

It was really scary to see how much pain someone can be in with nerve pain.

I’m so sorry to hear that, I remember going through similar when my mum had guillain barre syndrome and how scary it was. We were terrified not knowing what it was and my mum was in agony but the doctors insisted it was a panic attack.

Big hugs and I hope you get some answers soon, I know how awful it is seeing someone you love suffer and it’s lonely at this time of night xx

Redtrainyellowcarriage · 03/02/2025 04:07

Don't google , get rest even if it's not sleep you will need your energy tomorrow x

starkers22 · 03/02/2025 05:52

The cast is on. She made some noises I think I'll hear for the rest of my life. Fortunately she doesn't remember much about it. She's more comfortable and dozing now. They're going to x Ray again to check everything is in the correct position and the get her on a ward til the pain is more manageable. Thank you all so much for holding my hand while I've been holding hers x

That's a positive update. Hopefully xray shows it was successful and your DM gets a bed soon. Fingers crossed you get some sleep this morning - get a lift or taxi if you're too tired to drive safely.
