Awful teeth since pregnancy

Just posting for some advice/reassurance ever since having my children my teeth have been awful. I have needed a few fillings and as I have an nhs dentist these are ‘black’ (amalgam) fillings and I am really conscious of them. Does anyone else have these types of fillings? I never notice them on other people but always notice mine

I think it's relatively normal for issues with your teeth during pregnancy.

Although I don't have any fillings, I have had a lot of issues with my teeth for the last few years. I've got bone loss which has meant my gums have receded, leaving small gaps where my gums used to fill the bit in between each tooth.

I also got an infection in my top front tooth just before covid lock down (I didn't know I had an infection at that point). Fast forward two years, my tooth was agony and had moved, leaving a huge gap at the front. I also had root canal treatment on a molar and now have a gold cap on that! Don't know why it was gold, was just the NHS option!

I'm so self conscious of my teeth now. They were practically perfect before.

Even though I don't have fillings, I understand where you're coming from.

But I don't think the things you find imperfect about yourself are as noticeable to others as you think they are. Like you said, you don't notice anyone else's. We're our own worst critics!

@MrsJHernandez root canal is the biggest filling of them all imo If you've gone through that you can deal with anything.

@GentleSloth ask your GP and dentist if calcium supplements might help?

@IJulia Thanks! I also had root canal on that top front one, but it's loose and needs pulling 😭 That scares me more than any root canal! Just got to work up the courage to book in and see someone about an implant, but I've been putting it off since September lol.

Calcium does nothing for teeth as once they are formed calcium is not taken in or out .
The reason teeth can become worse during pregnancy can be due to

sickness, the enamel being damaged by stomach acid so don’t brush directly after being sick as it brushes acid into teeth ,

sickness making it difficult to brush teeth , so try to brush when not feeling nauseous

picking at food during day , sipping on juices or sugared tea/coffee , grazing so teeth are constantly under attack from sugar/acid . This also can be a factor in early baby days when it’s difficult to sit down for a meal.

Gums can be affected because pregnancy hormones can make gums extra sensitive to even the smallest amounts of plaque left behind .

In other words the teeth themselves are no weaker but sickness, cleaning and diet/grazing are what cause the problems.

I feel the same. My teeth a see thru on the edges and it's really gotten me down. I use a toothpaste called BioMin F which is very expensive and claims to help strengthen enamel. It has helped with the appearance over the last 6 months with constant use. I also sometimes use Sensodyne Mineral Boost.
I looked into have my teeth bonded on the front ones but it's very pricey and likely to need repairs in 5/7 years. I will probably do it as I get older if they get any worse.
