Discomfort, dull ache in torso under rib...

I know I'm being silly asking here but just curious as to what is up. I started to feel a bit bloated, full last night around 7pm. Put it down to maybe eating too much etc. anyway the discomfort still has t gone away. It's not very painful or anything that would prevent me going about my business but it's a dull ache that I'm
Aware off. It quite noticeable when I press on the area or bend down. It's just below my rib in the middle maybe a little towards my right side.

Any suggestions?

Indigestion, perhaps? It might be best to check with 111 just to put your mind at rest.

Gallstones?
Trapped wind?
Often mistaken for each other!
You could do 111 online

Can gallstones come out of nowhere?

I was going to say gallstones

HobnobsChoice · 02/02/2025 20:16

Gallstones was my guess too especially with feeling bloated and the pain to the right. Mine came out of nowhere but caused a lot more pain.
Most people have no idea they have gallstones until they cause problems

Mehmeh22 · 02/02/2025 20:16

Gallstones can feel they come out of nowhere. It's a horrible pain. Drink apple cider vinegar with mother to help get rid of it

donewithchewit · 02/02/2025 20:16

If it's gallstone and I'm not in severe pain should I just leave it be and let it pass?

I suggested 111 online, then you can get some proper help.

I'd start with some indigestion tablets, pop a heat pad on the area and see how you feel in the morning.

Do you do or know yoga? There are some moves on YouTube there that are gentle and help with trapped wind and indigestion.

Was your meal really fatty? That's what flares my gallstones to ache and shuffle around. I'm yet to have a full attack but I've had scans and know I have them. I'd say that's more of a distracting pain level.

Redtrainyellowcarriage · 02/02/2025 20:21

I walked myself to hospital to have my gallbladder removed, the Dr wanted to send me in an ambulance. Removed the same day

creamsnugjumper · 02/02/2025 20:21

In my experience 111 will get you to a local walk in for bloods maybe, and give you pain relief and maybe book a scan in for you. So depending on how bad the pain is? I'd either manage at home for the evening or get ready to go to a walk in.

No you really need to see your GP and get the appropriate tests. It tends to get worse over time, particularly if your diet contains fat. It culminates in a stone becoming trapped in the biliary duct, which is horrendously painful and can result in a very difficult surgical intervention with mixed results.

Similar pain last year for me that carried on for a few months, GP suspected gallstones. I had an ultrasound scan that found I had mild fatty liver disease - gallbladder and pancreas were fine. Never did find out what was causing the pain as NAFLD is generally painless (unless chronic). Seems to have resolve by losing 4 stone !

Go to your GP for examination and onward testing at hospital if required and try not to worry x

I've had similar the last couple of weeks and worked out it's trapped wind, I've been taking peppermint oil tablets from Holland and Barrett and they have been relieving it.

Gallstones. Always tends to stay in the evening/night time. My first attack was like you described. Like a niggling achey sensation that you feel like if only you could stretch the “right” way you could make it go away. I almost felt like a wanted to walk the pain off but I couldn’t. Lasted 2-3 days. The second attack 2 months later completely floored me for 72 hours and affected me for another week and I’d rather be in labour for 7 days that have that again. I could barely stand up. I got a scan and the lovely sonography woman said I ticked all the F boxes. Forty+, fat and fertile ( had given birth). Gallstone Jackpot apparently. Currently waiting for surgery to get my gallbladder removed . If is gall stones eating a very very low fat diet can help. Bland food like pasta, dry toast, porridge and stay away from alcohol. Taking a decent magnesium supplement can help too empty your gall bladder and you should eat asap every morning to prevent your bile from stagnating and the cholesterol forming more stones. Try not to eat for 3-4 hours before bed and do some gentle exercise after eating to improve digestive rates.
