Traditional Sunday lunch, but what for tea?

If you have a traditional Sunday lunch, what would you then have for tea/dinner?

I need ideas other than cheese on toast, as that's my only idea.

Cheese on toast is perfect or maybe a nice soup?

Runningoutofthyme · 02/02/2025 18:25

We usually have our Sunday dinner late afternoon so have a brunch option earlier in the day (pancakes and fruit or a full breakfast/breakfast sandwiches or eggs Benedict etc).

But as a kid we always had our Sunday roast at lunchtime. If I was at home my dad always made bacon and mushroom cobs for tea and if I was at grandma’s it was salmon cucumber and red onion cobs (the cucumber and onion was always marinated in a bowl of vinegar) with a choc ice for pudding! 😍

When I was a child we had boiled egg, or poached eggs on toast or kippers, or smoked haddock poached in milk with nice crusty bread to dip in the milky sauce. I wonder why I've never given my children that?! Also beans on toast.
With my kids we've always tended to have Sunday lunch at tea time due to the kids activities etc, whereas when I was a child it was Sunday school/church followed by Sunday lunch.

I always keep a bag of frozen mini sausage rolls in the freezer for this. We usually have a late Sunday lunch - a Sunday dinner really, at about 4ish due to teenage schedules and plans but if we do eat earlier than that then I just chuck some sausage rolls in the oven in the evening.

We have beige freezer tapas on a Sunday eve, love it! Then probably another helping of pud.

Katieweasel · 02/02/2025 18:30

We have pudding for tea

Crumpets is the only right answer here. Sadly I’m gluten free and the GF ones are all shit.

tillytoodles1 · 02/02/2025 18:43

After a large roast served about 3pm, we'd have sandwiches and crisps as a snack in the evening.

Ophy83 · 02/02/2025 18:43

I often do eggy bread for the kids if DH and I have cheese on toast.

Or everyone likes a little selection of cheese, crackers or bread sticks, fruit, carrot sticks, olives etc. Maybe a slice of pork pie or scotch egg, or a bit of ham.

A salad - in the winter this could include warm ingredients/blue cheese/nuts.

Hot or bbq wings, Celery, blue cheese dressing.
