Adult Scooter - 3 wheels

I posted in another section but didn't get many replies so reposting here to hopefully get some ideas

Due to chronic illness/disability my teen cannot walk far without becoming exhausted & making their symptoms worse. To help us get out & about we were thinking about using a scooter & effectively pulling them along - they won't accept the idea of a wheelchair.

However, their balance isn't great so we can't use a 2 wheel version but I can only find one 3 wheel one in an adult size in my searches & it's pricey www.micro-scooters.co.uk/original-kickboard-2in1-micro-scooter-silver-7383

Any ideas on where else to look, or alternatives that don't look like they're a mobility aid?

@JollyViper thanks again. Yes, it can be very expensive! I already can't work & have become a carer for them - also got my carer's application in.

We haven't had much interaction with the wonderful understanding public yet. They've been largely housebound for the last year, which is why we're so desperate now to try & find solutions to getting out of the house.

@Cheezewizz yes definitely don't want to spend too much as may not get used much, hard to judge. There's some different Globber models on eBay that I can see so will just check features are same/similar enough.

@JollyViper thanks they just won't accept anything that looks like a mobility aid - which means rarely leaving the house but that's another discussion altogether!

I think you need to try to sell the concept of some form of wheeled aid as freedom and something that will allow him to do more for longer.
There are some nifty wheelchairs with electric add ons. They don't come cheap though especially the fancier the design.

I understand where he's coming from, life is so difficult for young adults if they're different and they try not to be.....

I think even with you it would open a big can of worms unfortunately. I honestly wouldn't expect to be allowed to take anything into shops/shopping centres that isn't built to be a mobility aid. While I totally get where your teen is coming from, I would think the expectation would be that he would be using a clear mobility device not a scooter if he needed it in places that scooters aren't allowed.

@stichguru thank you for your kind words, sorry you have first hand experience of a similar situation.

Someone else mentioned about shops restrictions which I hadn't really considered, they'd only use it with us so I guess I thought it'd be ok. Not sure what else to do. They're too proud (& not wanting to draw attention, pity etc.) to accept a proper aid.

Hi. Extensive experience with my husband, mobility aids and access.

Public buildings - including shops - will only allow recognised mobility aids - wheelchair / electric wheelchair / mobility scooter. even with an adult they won't allow the type of scooter you are suggesting. The issue is while you know it's being used as a mobility aid other kids / parents won't and will be insisting on their fully able bodied cherubs being allowed to scoot around. (Their pubic liability insurance only covers mobility aids) . Also you will be constantly moaned at by other shoppers / building users as your teenager is on a scooter - believe me the moans even come ( albeit less) when using a recognised mobility aid !

I know it's tough for a teen but would they consider an electric wheelchair - some of the smaller ones are quite neat.

Make sure it’s listed as the ultimum as all the other globber 3 wheel designs are small

I also recommend the Globber Ultimum. They are very sturdy and you can choose how reactive you want the steering. They have a 100kg weight limit.
