Cost of Chinese takeaway!

If you hate Chinese/takeaways/never get one/prefer to cook then this isn’t for you.

For those who do indulge in a takeaway, I ordered some Chinese for the first time in a while and I am SHOCKED at the costs! I’m in London FWIW. Seaweed was £8 and change??? Wtf! I didn’t get that. Went for a simple meat/rice box, side of salt and pepper chips and came to £18.

To top it off, food was less than good. And it’s from a place that I’ve ordered from regularly and used to be really good! 2 other places I also frequented have permanently closed.

With prices I can see why people maybe haven't been buying as frequently (I’ve been trying to save money/dieting) but I assumed they’ve all had to hike prices up really ridiculously for a reason. Energy bills?

What’s takeaways like where you are?

Yes that's normal here. Fish & chips in particular seems soooo expensive now. Years ago we used to grab a chippy tea every week or so during the winter months, not anymore!

DoAWheelie · 02/02/2025 16:26

I think it's a London thing. Up in the North west I can order a chow mein that will feed me for two meals for £7.50 (and I'm a fat fucker who eats loads). Seaweed is £3.50 Duck and pancakes is £9.50. side of chips is £2.50.

I used to feed me, my OH, and my dad for £20 with leftovers easily. I don't order as often now as it's just me but I end up with three meals worth of food just trying to hit the minimum delivery amount.

JimHalpertsWife · 02/02/2025 16:26

It's got so expensive. We do an Indian takeaway instead on a Sunday evening as they have a special offer and one meal (plus a few sides) does two of us.

There was a whole thread on this kind of thing the other day that you might find interesting, hang on let me see if I can find it…

We were going to order a curry… one meat curry without rice was £14… so with rice and poppadoms would be circa £20 plus delivery. There are 3 adults in my house so looking at £50 for a take out.. I cooked instead

Purpleandgreenyarn · 02/02/2025 16:32

Yeah London here too- we only have takeaways now if we get sent a promotion from one of the apps

Soontobe60 · 02/02/2025 16:35

We had take away on Friday. King prawn satay, fried rice, noodles, veg spring rolls and a tub of sweet and sour sauce. £18 which included £1.80 delivery cost. Plenty of food for 2 greedy adults plus a bag of prawn crackers thrown in for ordering over £15.

Lazyliein · 02/02/2025 16:39

We live in a wee village and ours is good value. A main meal with rice or chips is £7.50 and a good sized portion . With rice a meal would feed me and dh.

They do a great set menu which feed the four of us for twenty quid. Always leftovers too. Quality is good.

I ordered a takeaway curry with a friend in the next town over and we spent £15 each getting one meal each. Was lovely though!

Yes same here in north of England. Ordered curry last night for my Dh, ds and me. Came to £48.00 - 3 mains, 2 rice, 1 naan bread and 1 side dish. No starters or poppadoms. Then DS announced he doesn’t like takeaway curry and prefers the one from Sainsbury’s that I put in the oven (at literally a quarter of the price)!

TuesdaysAreBest · 02/02/2025 17:05

Very expensive here to get take out. Our treat instead is something like a Charlie Billingham (sp?) meal for two. Our Waitrose has them on sale for £7. Really delicious.

Theperenniallaunderess · 02/02/2025 17:05

Also in London. The prices are insane. I make my own crispy duck now as that’s my fave bit - this recipe has never failed me and it’s really easy. Ding Dong Dim Sum is also good if you plan a little ahead.

Last night we had:

Singapore vermicelli £6.80
Crispy shredded chicken £6.60
Stir fried monk fish with ginger & spring onion £8.40
Garlic rice £4.70
Curry sauce £2.10

It was ridiculously delicious as always, from a small restaurant in the next village along from ours (Warwickshire)

mumbruh · 02/02/2025 17:10

2 adults 2 kids under 10 costs us about £40 with a rice, chowmein, pork balls, one starter and 2 mains - we share it all out between us

Crikeyalmighty · 02/02/2025 17:19

To be honest I can get from £20 for 2 right up to about £40 for 2 depending on what quality I want - the £40 one is incredibly different quality to the £20 ( and in my opinion fit only for pissed students or the very non fussy ) quality

ginasevern · 02/02/2025 17:20

Yes OP, those are Bristol prices too. And for the last few years I've been really disappointed with Chinese food in particular (all from different takeaways). The fried rice hasn't got that intrinsic deliciousness it used to have and other dishes are all watery. I thought it was just my bad luck.

ValentineValentineV · 02/02/2025 17:23

Four adults in my South East England household and we don’t get any change from £60. It’s the same with a curry takeaway, we only do one of each per year.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 02/02/2025 17:30

£9.50 for a chicken dish here, £13 for king prawn.

jackstini · 02/02/2025 17:30

We usually do over order so we have some for lunch the next day; but - our usual order was normally £58 (2 rice, 2 chow mein, 3 dishes plus starters - for 2 adults, 2 teens)

Last month it was £92. £92!!!!!

Now we only order when there is an offer in - was 40% off on an app last week so we indulged for dh's bday

AtleastitsnotMonday · 02/02/2025 17:32

Lots of Chinese food is fried in oil. The price of oil has sky rocketed.

ThisThreadCouldOutMe · 02/02/2025 17:33

This was our last Chinese order. Me and 20 year old DS. Usually lasts 2 days/3meals each.

Yanbu
We dont really do takeaways but i was shocked when we ordered one a few weeks back. We got a thai.
A jasmine rice was £7 and a pad thai was £17
😵‍💫
5 yrs ago we used to go out 2-4 x pm to a thai restaurant in z3 and it about £25 for 2.... our recent takeaway cost £60 something pounds

biscuitsandbooks · 02/02/2025 17:36

Definitely not normal around here.

We pay around £7 for a main meal (cheaper for veggie) and the £3 for rice/chips/noodles on the side. Prawn crackers are free if you spend £20. The portions are massive too.

Mum2jenny · 02/02/2025 17:39

Ordered a fixed price meal for 2 (duck n pancakes, mini spring rolls, egg fried rice and 3 mains) 2 additional mains, prawn crackers, extra sweet n sour sauce and banana fritters. It was to feed 4 adults. Cost was under £50, East Midlands
