No one is interested in the abandoned car which has been left outside my property for almost a year

Approx. 10 months ago a car was left parked (on the road) outside of our house.

It has not been moved in all of that time and I have never once seen anyone come to the car. It does not belong to any neighbour. I have checked online and it has no MOT so may not be insured. It is Taxed until March this year.

I have contacted the council who say it is a police matter, police say it is of no concern to them (assuming because it currently has road tax) and have advised me to contact the council again, I have done that but they are not interested. I have asked on our local FB group if it belongs to anyone from the village but no one seems to know who it belongs to. So it appears it is there to stay for a while longer.

It isn't blocking any driveways etc so I suppose there is nothing more I can do. It is just a bit of an eyesore having sat there unattended for almost a year.

Will the authorities have to do something about it once the road tax runs out?

Is it insured? It shouldn’t be on a road if it’s not insured, even if it’s SORNed. Have a look on askmid.com

It has no MOT, I was always lead to believe a car with no mot can't be insured?

I dunno if I’d allow it to “accidentally” ignite but I would definitely move it as others have mentioned. You can get wheeled jacks to make it easy to scoot it elsewhere. Preferably to somewhere problematic so they get off their arses and remove it promptly.

DH has a little tractor and is very tempted to take the car for a 'little' ride out down over the fields lol!

Not strictly true, you have to insure a vehicle to go to and from an MOT station to get a car MOTed. being on the road untaxed and uninsured is a different matter where the car could/will be confiscated.

Nope that’s an urban myth.

Nope that’s an urban myth.

Yet everything I Google on this subject tells me that a car is not insured if the vehicle has proven not to be road worthy (ie no MOT)?

For some reason I can't add the screenshot from Go compare but it basically says the same thing.

Why is it an urban myth? I can't find anything online stating a car without an update to date MOT can sit on a public road. Genuinely interested as it's hard to find anything about this on the government website.

Can you scrap it or do you need paperwork? Asking as a car has been left outside the unit I rent for over a year and no one knows whose it is (or is bothered)

Edited

Roadworthy and MOT are not the same thing. A car can be roadworthy even if the MOT has expired, and a car can be unroadworthy even with a current MOT.

Check any car insurance policy and look for the bit where it says the car must have an MOT for the insurance to be valid. You won’t find it.

I assume its private land so its the landlord who has to deal with it

I'm getting muddled up with MOT and tax reading this but we had this on our road. Our opposite neighbours daughter's boyfriend (still with me) is always parking cars outside and just leaving them. I check them every time for tax and report them. One day about three cars on the road got the warning stickers, he moved one, the other two were clamped and lifted shortly after.

Report an untaxed vehicle

Anonymously report an untaxed vehicle that you’ve seen.

pour a bit of petrol or diesel on the ground under the tank/ engine and tell police you think it’s a fire risk

cansu · 04/02/2025 18:14

How can a perfectly normal vw golf parked on the road be an eyesore?? Why do you care so much about this car?

Because it's been left outside my house for almost a year, untouched and we all have a responsibility for our vehicles. What would the country look like if every car with a failed MOT was left on the roads?
If a car fails it's MOT either get it fixed and re-mot'd it sell it for scrap.

If it doesn’t have an MOT then it can’t be re taxed when the tax expires in March. So either the owner will have to move it to MOT it, or you can report it to the DVLA for no tax and they will ultimately remove it.

Either way not too long to wait.

MrsCarson · 04/02/2025 18:43

I reported on to DVLA it was gone in about 2 weeks. I also complained that the one across the street was leaking diesel and rotting the pavement, even though it ran and was in use, it was a rusty bucket. I was so annoyed at it one day when I stepped in the diesel and walked it into the hall of the house. I could smell it for ages. That one was removed at the same time. Council had no interest at all.

Watching the 'Cheap TV' there seems to be a big issue with 'untaxed/uninsured/no MoT' vehicles not so much the fact that they lack documents but that they are driven dangerously and or are involved in crime.

Clearly if getting them off the road was high priority and I suggest not just clamping them but towing them without any warning I suggest that there would be a lot of benefits and some very very upset chavs

This one has been sat for nearly a year, so clearly not being used for crime. Also it is taxed and no evidence it’s not insured. Just lacking an MOT.

One of my sisters live in italy, and in their apartment block, they have an underground car park.

A car hadn't been moved in YEARS and had a thick layer of dust on it. Everyone complained but it was never looked into.

It turns out the owner (who lived on the top floor) was dead inside her apartment, and had been for many years. Poor woman.
