Or not really bother?

I try to buy locally-grown produce, yes.

MrsSethGecko · 02/02/2025 12:39

Yes I do.

Coldnat · 02/02/2025 12:39

I just buy the cheapest which normally isn’t British, in a money no object situation I’d love to buy local and British.

Aintnobodygottime · 02/02/2025 12:39

Yep. We mostly only buy seasonal fruit and veg for example.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 02/02/2025 12:46

What about manufactured goods?

Yes with regards food and drink I always try to buy British where possible even if its more expensive. I appreciate that not everyone can afford to that.

What about manufactured goods?

No because German tends to be better.

pointythings · 02/02/2025 12:55

Foodstuffs - yes. Other things - no, I choose based on quality and how closely the product matches my wants and needs as well as my budget. For instance, my slippers are Australian because they are warm, have a cushioned sole and are made from reclaimed ocean plastic, which is important to me.

protectthesmallones · 02/02/2025 13:01

I'd love to be able to buy British but our food bill would double. I buy the best I can afford.

Yellowtulipsdancing · 02/02/2025 13:02

Hard to know what is actually British rather than been packaged in one country, parts from another.

if there was very honest labelling then I would consider it more,

food, yes always aim for local seasonal produce.

Sinkintotheswamp · 02/02/2025 13:04

Yes for food, it's less food miles.

Today I stood there like a lemon in sainsburys wondering whether the UK greenhouse grown Thanet Earth tomatoes used less carbon than the ones flown in from Morocco. (I bought the nice uk ones).

DoNoTakeNo · 02/02/2025 13:05

If possible with non-food & drink, then unless it is prohibitively expensive I will.
For food and drink, yes I do - if the British version isn't available then I'll do without.

Farmersweeklyreader · 02/02/2025 13:15

Food - yes I will always pick the uk version over imports. I buy local beef.
Everything else we try to buy locally ie from a local shop instead of ordering from the internet so we are spending money in our local economy. I appreciate most of the things we buy will be manufactured abroad though.

Food yes mostly (although 2 in my family love bananas, so obviously not for that). Also citrus fruit as I use it a lot in cooking, never seen a British lime! The lemons I’ve tried to grow at home weren’t entirely successful.

Wine only when it’s on offer. British wine is very expensive and I prefer French. But I don’t think on average the distance of coming from France weighs on me a huge amount in terms of environment. We just don’t have the terroir and climate for the type of French wines I like in the UK.

Germany for things like washing machines and cars, they’re consistently the best in reviews.

Clothes, yes for some things, but others I find difficult to get hold of, so I imagine it’s mostly made in China. Sometimes I make my own, but very rarely.

atotalshambles · 02/02/2025 13:16

I try to buy British as much as possible. Also try to avoid any fruit and vegetables from outside Europe. I also try to eat less meat and buy organic or free range higher welfare. It's more expensive but I try to bulk out with pulses and vegetables.
