Washing machine repair - pay again?

I recently had a trusted washing machine specialist visit to fix my machine . He charged £50 for 15 minutes of work (his rate is £50 per hour and that includes call out charge) and mentioned that a certain part might also need replacing if the fix did not work. However, the machine is still making a horrid noise, so I'll need him back and most likely to replace that part.

My concern is whether I will need to pay another £50, given that he was just here and didn't fully resolve the issue. If he does charge again, should I accept it, or is it reasonable to question it? I don't want to lose a good and reliable tradesman, but I also want to be fair. What would you do?

Sounds like he will expect payment again but he isn’t a ‘good and reliable’ tradesman if he didn’t fix the issue whilst there. Did he not test the machine before he left?

These days I treat washing machines as a consumable. I just buy the cheapest I can find that does what I want.

What brand is your machine? Can you contact the manufacturer in case they have their own engineers or can recommend 'partners' they work with? When my old Miele was dying Miele sent an engineer - I paid a fixed fee which meant all repair parts and labour were included and if they couldn't repair it then I got the whole cost I'd paid off a new machine. (It was not economical to repair so I got a new one - it was almost 20 and had done way more than the number of washes for a machine of its age!)

I buy the cheapest one also and hope I get a year out of it. I’ve had free repairs twice under the 1 year warranty. If it breaks after that I will buy another one.

Btw, I had my last cheap washing machine for 5 years so more than a year out of it.

No you certainly shouldn't be expecting to pay again as the didn't fix the problem did he?

Agree with the others -either buy the cheapest machine or a really expensive one - the mid range ones are the problem in my opinion
