How do you do dishes in your house?

Riveting question on a Sunday morning, I know.Grin

Here it's mixed. One washes under running water, one does the bowl/sink full of water thing. We both think the other is wrong- one thinks one way is wasteful, the other thinks one way is dirty (that might have more to do with the washer than the method though)- . We don't argue about it (anymore) and just let each other to get in with it.

So what happens in your household? One way? The other? Also a mix?

We don't have the space for a dishwasher, so that's not an option.

Hot soapy water in bowl to wash. Hot rinse to get suds off under tap.

shellyleppard · 02/02/2025 10:50

Sink full of very hot water and scrub away....🤣

Comedycook · 02/02/2025 10:52

We have a dishwasher but when it was broken...I had the hot water tap running and washed each item in that using a soapy sponge. They were terrible times.

Whatshallwedohere · 02/02/2025 10:53

Running water if it can’t go in the dishwasher for whatever reason. A bowl full of dirty dishes and murky water is just gross

Whatshallwedohere · 02/02/2025 10:54

You can get counter top dishwashers too - worth a look

BlueSilverCats · 02/02/2025 10:56

DD does a mix depending on how dirty/oily things are , but leaning more towards running water.

We do both! Run under running water to get rid of any remaining sauces/foods etc, then scrub with a cloth in a bowl of soapy water and then a rinse to get rid of any soap.

Tisthedamnseason · 02/02/2025 11:15

If I have to wash by hand, I give anything really dirty a quick rinse in the mini middle sink, then use a sink of soapy water to wash, then rinse the suds off. We have a dishwasher so it's not much, but if I was washing up a lot I'd start with the cleaner things (glasses, plates that had sandwiches in), finish with the dirtiest (saucepans, cooking dishes), and just refresh the water halfway through if it got too murky.

I wouldn't wash under continuously running water unless I was just giving one thing that wasn't that dirty a quick wash.

Topseyt123 · 02/02/2025 11:15

The majority of things just go in the dishwasher in this house, but there are things that can't or won't fit easily.

For stuff that must be washed up by hand I use hot soapy water in the sink and then a cold rinse to get the suds off.

You can usually get a dishwasher into even the smallest of kitchens. My DD1 is replanning her really tiny kitchen and is getting one in. A slimline half-size one. There are also countertop or tabletop ones. Still worth a look.

Many people see a dishwasher as losing a cupboard. However, a dishwasher is a cupboard in itself, one that swallows mess and then cleans it.

icebearforpresident · 02/02/2025 11:19

We both fill a basin with hot soapy water. However, I stack them on the drainer correctly, he plays a version of Jenga in the dish rack where everything is precariously balanced and one tiny knock will send everything flying.

We did our kitchen a few years ago and didn’t get a dishwasher, much to the amazement of everyone. But out of all the household chores washing dishes is the one I don’t actively hate.

ChoosingANewNameIsTooHard · 02/02/2025 11:38

Also no space for a dishwasher. I wash dishes in order from cleanest to dirtiest in a basin of very hot soapy water. I have cold water running on low in the middle sink to rinse the dishes before they're washed then to rinse the soap off before they're stacked to dry. Anything with baked on/ hardened food gets left to soak in the basin at the end while I have a cup of tea then I go back to tackle it again.

Ah yes, the dish rack debacle too! Grin

We differ on that one too. The worst is when the "thrower" puts things like pans or bowls the right side up/not tilted enough so they still have water in them.

We have a dishwasher OP.

On another topic, how do you do your laundry?

Coldnat · 02/02/2025 13:32

Under running water and a scrub daddy knock off thing to dispense the soap while scrubbing

I slightly separate, he doesn't. We're both probably substandard compared to most people. We also use the drier A LOT in winter(well about 7 months of the yearGrin).

Normally the dishwasher but 4 days in between old one and delivery of new one showed DH to be a running water washer and me a sorter and finding plastic bowl to put in sink washer.

Natsku · 02/02/2025 13:39

Ah my DD was taught a 13 step method to hand wash dishes! But a condensed version, which is what we do, is first scrape food scraps off then rinse, then fill sink with hot soapy water and wash dishes in order of dirtyness (so glasses and cutlery first, pots and pans last), rinse in hot water, then put to dry (have a drying cupboard)

louisl8 · 02/02/2025 13:42

Rinse dishes first if covered in food etc.

Very hot soapy water, wash glasses first.

Throw cutlery in to soak.

Then wash rinsed dishes! ALWAYS wash mash potato pot last if there is one Grin

Leave to drain until dry

Surroundedbyfools · 02/02/2025 13:43

I wash them under running water. I don’t care what anyone has to say about it lol they r cleanest that way !

SqualidSlob · 02/02/2025 13:50

I just leave everything. I'm waiting for the mould and/or bacteria to grow tiny legs, like microscopic millipedes, and walk the dishes right out of the house. It's been more than a month and nothing's happened yet!

In less squalid times, I wash up under a running tap.

We didn't actively teach her . Once it became her job, she got on with it, and like I said picked bits from both. Tbf, I don't care as long as it gets done and the dishes are (fairly) clean.

She refuses to do cutlery though!! Confused

Dishwasher is currently broken so I wash under hot running water. I can't get my head around the plastic bowl in the sink thing.

chattyness · 02/02/2025 14:12

Hot soapy water in washing up bowl, then set on the draining rack and rinsed with a jug of clean water

Hayley1256 · 02/02/2025 14:14

Bowl full of hot soapy water then rinse each item under the running tap after washing it in the bowl. I also change the water after cutlery, plates, cups etc (unless there are only a few items)

DD was taught the 13 step method in school, in Home Ec, had to memorise it for the exam (also a multiple step method for loading the dishwasher...)

Grin at refusing to do cutlery! I can kind of understand that, can get pricked by sharp points, they feel weird in water if you're not wearing rubber gloves, things like that.
