Do you go on holidays/breaks to the same places?

Do you go on holidays/breaks to the same places with the dc? Or do you go somewhere different?

When our dc were younger we would spend our main family abroad holiday in a villa in Spain owned by our friend, it was perfect as friend also had kids and there were toys, safe pool, travel cots when needed, came with a car, we knew the local area well etc, it was just so easy and familiar.
We’ve not been back for years because essentially we (dh and I at least) got bored although it served us well and don’t regret it.
Over the past 8 years we’ve gone to different places and never revisited the same place twice.
I imagine when dh and I are in more advanced years the idea of familiarly and the security of knowing where everything is etc might appeal to us again for ease. And I don’t say that to sound rude or disparaging or patronising about anyone who revisits the same place, we all want and need different things from our holidays but for now we are happy to go to new places and try different things.

We normally go to a different place each year. I get bored of the same place and like visiting somewhere new. There are only a limited number of holidays we'll do with the kids before they don't want to come with us any more, so we won't get a chance to take them to some countries if we always go back to the same place. Though we've gone back to a couple of places where we went with DD1 when she was a toddler, because now we have DD2 and feel like she missed out. And we visit DH's parents abroad every year (which I do find boring, but it has to be done).

FattyFattyBooomBoom · 01/02/2025 20:37

We’ve gone to a few places more than once. This year we are going somewhere completely different. I like going places that we know are good and not wasting our money, but it gets boring quickly.

I have a friend who has a caravan in a lovely place, they spend every holiday there (min 3x a year). They have lots of stuff there, it sounds very stress free and I can imagine the kids make friends and have happy memories). This year her kids are 15, 12 and 9 and they are flying for the first time- to an AI in Egypt. I do wonder what they will make of it

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 01/02/2025 20:43

We like to go back to the same place for a second or third time but only if there’s lots to see and do. We tend to alternate new locations with places we’ve been previously where we can relax into straight away as we know what to expect.

CurlsandCurves · 01/02/2025 20:45

As an adult choosing my own holidays I’ve never been back to the same country twice. That’s not to say I’ve not thoroughly enjoyed where we’ve been, and would happily return, it’s just that it’s a big old world and why not explore it if you can.

Some have been far flung, others it’s been the Spanish or Greek islands, European resorts and UK city breaks.

Now our kids are older we are more able to indulge our travel bug.

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 01/02/2025 21:08

I do both - go to the same old.place every February cos l know the weather is ok and loke the hotel. But l try and go slmewhere new each year too.

Throwaway0912 · 01/02/2025 21:20

We do both. Same place for one holiday, requires very little planning or thinking and we get there and just fall into the rhythm of it. It feels a bit like going "home" and I feel relaxed as soon as I leave the airport.

Then we go new places, entirely different pace of holiday and we have the excitement of planning and discovering somewhere new.

I think there's room for both!

Samanabanana · 01/02/2025 21:22

While the DC are young, we go back to the same places. Makes holidays stress free and a genuine break from reality. When they're older, we'll go back to more adventurous holidays!

RosesAndHellebores · 01/02/2025 21:26

We have a home in France and have been going there since 2005! DH is a creature of habit. He skis at the same resort every year. I occasionally go elsewhere with dd or a friend.

itispersonal · 01/02/2025 21:29

We do a bit of both

Mum used to have a caravan near the coast, so regularly went there during dds early years and school holidays.
We now go to my friends holiday home every summer holidays for a week and have done for the last 6 summers. Also been to Majorca on most aboard holidays but different parts of the island.
But have also done Disneyland Paris and Florida.

rewardacrosstrack · 01/02/2025 21:35

We tend to do two abroad holidays a year. One to the same familiar, easy resort town in the canaries and then another to somewhere new. Gives us the best of both worlds. We started going on our regular canaries trip pre kids but have carried on since having them and now they both love it too.

reluctantbrit · 01/02/2025 21:37

We try to go somewhere different each year, maybe same country but not the same area.

DD will go to uni this year and we have a list of places we will go to as it wasn’t possible with her.

Bjorkdidit · 01/02/2025 21:54

Yes. We've been to Andalusia in Spain around 50 times and not even scratched the surface. Will continue to keep going back as I have an endless list of villages, museums, walks, beaches, restaurants etc to see.

I roll my eyes at people who say they've 'done' somewhere as if they've completed it and ticked it off a list.

RomainingToBeSeen · 01/02/2025 22:21

We've done both. As a PP said, some familiarity with children makes for an easier holiday.

When DC were little we went back to the same villa for a few years; we then moved to a bigger resort where we had an apartment for a few years and there was more to do for DC. We then went to the same AI resort for a while as we liked it and knew that it was safe for the DC to have some freedom and join in activities. Then we found a resort that was great for water sports and sport for teens and that was good, particularly as several families were repeat guests and we made lots of friends with others who had DC of similar ages.

Before DC we never went to the same place but we've found that now we can go to places for a few years before we 'grow out of it' and it feels like the right time to go somewhere else.

VivSavage · 02/02/2025 07:22

We've visited the same resort four times as it ticks all the boxes, which are things like flight times, distance from the airport and resort facilities. As the children have grown, we've been able to visit new parts of the island and try things that the children were too young to enjoy on previous visits.

This year we're taking a completely different type of holiday, somewhere much further away and we're all really looking forward to it.

I don't regret our previous holidays at all, it can be hard travelling with young children and we found something that worked really well for all of us.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/02/2025 07:55

We never go to exactly the same place we've been before.

Tisfortired · 02/02/2025 07:58

We go to the same place in the UK every year (Northumberland) because we love it and know we’ll have a nice time. We tend to go abroad every other year and it’s so expensive we’ve never been to the same place twice, we’d rather see more places abroad. If we had enough money for several abroad holidays there’s a couple of places we’ve been that we’d love to go back to regularly. Maybe when the kids have grown up and it’s just us we will!

wipeywipe · 02/02/2025 08:04

My parents bought a house in France when I was a young dc so we used to go there at least once a year. i have continued to go there for years and take my dc too.

wipeywipe · 02/02/2025 08:06

We also go to places in the UK pretty regularly eg New Forest but sometimes stay in different places.
