I can barely string a sentence together, what supplements do I need??

I have recently started a new job as a 1:1 music teacher and my god, I talk a lot of shit. It relies on me to keep the session flowing but also to make student at ease, and obviously that’s on top of explaining how to play the instrument and read the music etc. Have to make it fun too!

I’ve noticed it in my friendships too though, I just can’t get a sentence out smoothly. I feel like I’m hardly ever making sense. Hopefully some of that is my own perception and self-judgement, some of it will be down to nerves too, but there is a hell of a lot of brain fog going on too.

I’m sure it’s a combination of:

  • leftover baby brain from 3 kids (it never comes back apparently)
  • not enough sleep
  • too much sugar to give me energy
  • an inflammatory connective tissue disease (again, sugar doesn’t help), although overall diet is pretty good

I already take:

  • berocca, so multi vitamin
  • max strength gentle iron
  • high strength vit d
  • magnesium
  • fish oil every other day as it’s gross
  • collagen every other day as it’s expensive but really helps with my joints

I did try golden milk the other day which wasn’t as revolting as I imagined, so should do that more, but it’s more to do with inflammation than mental sharpness?

Exercise wise I see a PT once a week and try and do stuff in between but the weeks come round so fast I don’t do much in between.

So annoying, I can only ever think of things I should have said after the fact; and in the shower! I try and prepare what I’m gonna say but it only works in the shower 😆

Honestly I don't think you can use supplements to fix this. You need some proper sleep, 2 kiwis before bed is meant to help you sleep better but doesn't help if it's children keeping you up.

Hi OP

Have you had your thyroid levels tested?

I worked somewhere where our supremely competent office manager went steadily downhill, to the point where neurological scans were ordered because it was felt that something was really wrong. Then some bright doctor thought to include thyroid in her next set of bloods and that was it! A couple of months on high amounts of Levothyroxine, then onto a normal dose and she was back to her usual self.

Look up the levels online and get your actual level info after testing, don’t accept “within the normal range” from your doctor - some peoples’ normal is too low to function properly.

@SerenStarEtoile gosh, interesting thanks. I don’t know if my thyroid has been checked actually, if it has been it would have been back in 2021/2022 when I was diagnosed with my autoimmune disease. Maybe I’ll check with the doc but having just googled, only other ‘thyroid symptom’ I have would be tiredness and bad nails and hair.

@Apileofballyhoo I’m 35…. I’m not ready 😭😭

OP, this is nothing to do with supplements.

I'm not a doc, but I know that some of the inflammatory connective tissue diseases have neurological involvement, which could be the source of the communication issues.

Do you have a rheumatologist? Please mention this to whoever is following you for the CTD.

Kiwi research

There's quite a lot of research into kiwis and sleep admittedly the above is as it relates to elite athletes but it's the first I came to. It's because of the serotonin kiwis contain so 2 a night for a month should see an improvement

Oh Lordy. Thanks will do! I never know whether to just email the rheumatologist or go through GP. I only have a phone call with the rheumatologist once a year.
