School shoes

Is it just me and my 90s upbringing that remembers not being allowed patent school shoes because they scuffed?

Now I have two school aged DD’s, I have found their patent ones look so much nicer by the time they’ve been outgrown than if they’ve had leather. And I was recommended in clarks some liquid patent so when DD2 scratched it a teeny bit I used that to cover it up. DD2 has just outgrown her school shoes and they look barely worn.

Have I just been lucky or does anyone else agree patent lasts so much longer than leather?

DD1 is in year 3 and both children have roughly x2 pairs school shoes per year, all but a few have been patent leather

Yes! I wasn't allowed pantent shoes as they couldn't be polished so would look scruffy.

Bought DD some when she started school and they lasted brilliantly.

So either our parents lied to us or patent shoes last better now or leather shoes are worse quality.

Literally same and I always wanted them but was never allowed for the same reason.

Leather does that horrible thing from rain where it dyes it green and I know I could polish but whose got time🙈

Or maybe they didn't want us falling foul of children's TV advertising, I desperately wanted the ones with the magic key in the bottom.

I did have some red leather T-bar ones and was very excited by the ones Joanie did this year although didn't actually get around to buying them.

DD2’s current school shoes are inspired by the magic steps (apparently).

No real key though any more though, just a silly glitter one on the sole that she’s smitten with!

I had patent as a kid and always get them for my girls now. And yes they love the magic key inspired ones!

Back in the Very Olden Days, girls I knew at a Catholic school were told by the nuns never to wear patent shoes, because boys would be able to see the reflection of your knickers in them, and goodness only knew what sinful lust would be aroused!

I wonder if it depends on the patent. DD had more expensive ones in the past that were great. I got her some cheap boots this year when it started to rain and didn't stop, the toes have basically pealed. Black nail varnish is great for filling in smaller damage holes though!
