Gripping audiobooks

I’ve recently got into running and the only way I can make myself keep going is by listening to something so gripping that I would rather endure the pain of keeping going than switch it off. I listen to a lot of Podcasts but am keen to try an audiobook. Can anyone recommend anything really gripping? I enjoy most genres except horror or fantasy, and ideally not too complicated a plot as hard to flip backwards to remind myself who a character is like I would with a hard-copy book.

LJ Ross DCI Ryan series is very good and the narrator Jonathon Keeble is excellent. I also found the audible original adaptations of Rebecca Gables books an unexpected treat and immersive.

I read a lot fantasy, urban fantasy and romantasy which doesn't sound like your thing but if you enjoy a good crime novel I entreat you to give the Rivers of London series a chance.

None of this true by Lisa Jewell. It’s actually done a bit like a podcast, really good narration and a great story

Chronicles of St Mary's are fun and the Slough House audiobooks are brilliant. It's all about the narrator for me though, they absolutely make or break an audio book. (Rivers of London already mentioned!)

I'm currently listening to confessions of a 40 year old f* up and loving it. It's fiction funny and very relatable

Henry Porter spy books are very good on Audible. And the early Charles Cummings spy books, but the latter books have a VERY irritating narrator.

Also the Strike books are sensational on Audible. And you get about 30hrs of listening.

I just listened to 'The Grandmother' by Jane E James - loved it

Behind Closed Doors - BA Paris. You will probably add a few extra miles in your run, as you won't be able to stop listening!

I liked Daisy Jones and the Six on audiobook - was like listening to a great documentary

I love audiobooks and listen to loads.
I find anything by Freida McFadden really gripping. I’ve also recently listened to a few free Audible ones by K.L. Slater and enjoyed them too. And another recent one was “The Burning Air” by Erin Kelly, which was also excellent.

Agree with frieda McFadden, easy listening. Same with KL slater.

the authors I love for audiobooks are Lucy foley, Riley sager, John marrs, Alice Feeney, Anna-Lou weatherley.

you can get some decent free listens on audible, or download your library’s app (mine is borrow box) and it’s all free (you need a library account).

I’d recommend JD Kirk books - excellent narration

Gonnaenodothat · 01/02/2025 20:24

Yes,I listened to this one a few months ago it was really good, They are apparently making it into a Netflix drama. I've listened to a few by lisa jewell some were duds but mainly I enjoyed them, I would also recommend the night she disappeared ( also lisa jewell )

katscamel · 01/02/2025 20:47

I'm a Rivers of London fan as well.... a cross between .... Eastenders/Dr Who/ Terry Pratchet/ Sherlock Holmes. As a definite bonus, the guy who reads them has a gorgeous voice.

Offleyhoo · 01/02/2025 20:51

I think American Dirt too.

Oh, I read this before audio books were a thing. Can confirm it's so good, it's one of the rare books I have kept after reading.

I listen to Autobiographies. Currently Al Pacino's.
Prince Harry's was a low point in my listening history 😬

cunoyerjudowel · 01/02/2025 21:27

Joy Ellis is really good
Mark Edward's follow you home

I am listening to the killing currently which is really good

Apollo365 · 01/02/2025 21:30

Crime/procedural? I really liked Joy Ellis - Jackman and Evans books read by Richard Armitage, he has a lovely voice for audiobooks.
The Strike books are great, they go on for hours and very gripping.

Sammysquiz · 04/02/2025 21:08

Thank you. I’m so grateful for all these suggestions, I now have an epic queue of books in Audible! I’m going to have to become an ultra-runner to get through them all 😁
