I know this has been done to death, but I haven’t been able to find a definitive answer.

We currently have a shark lift away. It’s fine but heavy on the stairs. Wondering if we should invest in a stick vacuum cleaner. Which recommends this Samsung Jet 95 (it’s one of the mid range ones but still pricey).

Or the other option is get a Miele c3 which seems to be recommended here a lot, and then a regular DustBuster.

The main thing is having something that we can easily do the stairs with as they get really dusty, plus added benefit of being able to do sofa. My worry with a DustBuster is it will just run out all the time and just be a pain. The worry with the stick hoover is it won’t be powerful enough.

any advice really appreciated!

Some vacuum cleaners have extra long tubes and my Henry can cope with stairs, so I use from bottom for half way up and from top down for the rest. Depends on the configuaration of the stairs and maybe just a handheld for the stairs and choose another vacuum that covers the rest.

I'm going to ask the obvious question: do you actually 'lift away' your Shark? As I'm surprised you find it too heavy then.

We got a sebo felix pet late year and very happy with it so far.

Cons: expensive, you need to buy some accessories (including long extension hose) as it doesn't come with some things, which are also expensive. Heavy and takes a bit to get used to steering it. Different heads are a faff to change so even through they are better we rarely change as we only have a small amount of hard floor. Tools not stored on board, there is an attachment to put on the handle but we don't use it. Bagged so cost of bags

Pros: feels solid built. much better at lifting dirt than the shark was, doesn't judder across the carpet pile like the shark did. Better pickup on hard floors with the head for floors. The long extension hose we bought means vacuum stays at bottom of switch back stairs and more than plenty of length to reach top. Bags last ages (we are still on first one nothing like the shark where we were constantly emptying the dusty container - but we don't have our Labrador anymore so can't compare to when we had a pet 2 years ago). Bags mean you don't need to wash/dry dusty filters constantly, we think there is less dust build up in house generally as it is being retained in the sebo.

Generally pleased with it, but it's still early days. (There are a few YouTube reviews on it that are worth a watch)

I love a vacuum chat! 😂
We recently upgraded to a Dyson V8 cordless absolute, I love it!

A single charge I can do the whole house and a bit more.

Stairs are a dream to vacuum now, without a trailing cord or heavy unit to lug up and down. I attach the 'carpet head' directly to the main unit (without the 'stick') to do the stairs so it's small and not unwieldy.

Definitely recommend cordless stick vacuum and really wonder what took me so long to switch.

@YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME Henry was on our list too as dh (tradesman) uses one to clean up after jobs, I tried it once, but I personally prefer an upright. Henry is a great choice for a cylinder.

Slowhorses1 · 01/02/2025 11:53

Thanks so much! I also weirdly love a vacuum chat (what have I become!).

We do use the lift away, but our stairs are tall with lots of turns and I personally just find it a ball ache to use.

Ive heard such mixed things about the Dyson show that I’ve been wary of them.

@WeAllHaveWings im guessing that’s the regular vacuum rather than stick version?

@YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME ill look at the Henry!

Highly recommend Samsung stick vacuums.

I don't think Sebo do a stick version... I didn't see one. Mine is the Sebo Felix Pet, I have never fancied stick vacuums, although have never tried one.

If you mean the old Shark I hated had, it was an upright too. It was like Christmas come early when it finally broke (after only around 3-4 years of use).

KnickerlessParsons · 02/02/2025 15:09

Do you have carpet on the stairs?
If so, it's much easier to use a silicon brush than a vacuum cleaner.

Slowhorses1 · 02/02/2025 18:01

@KnickerlessParsons yes we do, well a runner (and it’s a sisal look material like attached).

I’ve never heard of those. I’ll check them out. My concern is that our stairs get really really dusty for some reason. Do those brushes get all the ingrained dust up?
