I didn't realise I was displaying any sort of 'attitude'!

A few of our group of friends met up for coffee recently, and we were talking about one of our group who is staying with family fo a month in the Lake District. (Her parents live there).

We were talking about what a lovely place it looks, from her recent photos on Facebook! I added 'Yes, it looks more like somewhere you'd go on holiday, rather than live there'!

My friend's dh rolled his eyes and said he'd 'met people with my attitude before'! I was a bit stunned by that, then the subject got changed.

I meant nothing more than, it looks a beautiful place! Nothing negative at all, would anyone else take this as a negative comment? I was confused, and rather upset. 🤔

Does he live there?

SpringBunnyHopHop · 01/02/2025 09:27

I don’t think it sounds bad at all. Some places do look like holiday locations/homes.

TheBoysAndTheBallet · 01/02/2025 09:27

He's an idiot, don't give it another thought.

Scentedjasmin · 01/02/2025 09:27

He sounds like a right dick head. It's a shame that you didn't ask him to elaborate what he meant by it.

Largestlegocollectionever · 01/02/2025 09:28

What a strange comment for him to make.
i live there btw, it IS as stunning if not more so, that pics make out. Its amazing 😍

MelisandeLongfield · 01/02/2025 09:34

I suppose he thought you meant "It would be OK for a holiday, but I wouldn't want to live there."

If you had said that, I don't think it's a 'bad' comment, just an observation, but it could be seen as a criticism rather than a compliment.

Comff · 01/02/2025 09:41

Can you msg and ask what he meant by that as it’s been playing on your mind?

CrispyCrumpets · 01/02/2025 09:44

Probably got a chip on his shoulder about tourists or something. Don't know why you didn't just ask what he meant though.

OP shouldn't do this - he's made a dickish comment, that's all.

Doloresparton · 01/02/2025 09:51

He's a knobber, ignore him.

In future say 'could you explain please, what attitude?'

Exactly. I don’t know why he took it personally - maybe he’s from somewhere that attracts a lot of tourists - but it was a weird thing for you to say.

NowThatYouSayIt · 01/02/2025 10:06

It’s not that mysterious. It’s somewhere that has in parts been eaten by tourism and second-home owners who make it difficult for people who live there to buy a home, or to conduct ordinary activities like farming with traffic-clogged roads in summer. Your comment sounded like you thought it was some kind of theme park, with no actual inhabitants. He’s heard that before.

BleachedJumper · 01/02/2025 10:08

Are you a Londoner op?

Coconutter24 · 01/02/2025 10:09

To me it sounds like you were just saying it’s a beautiful place. He may of took it the wrong way but that’s on him. I would of been tempted to ask him what he meant by that

Wemaybebetterstrangers · 01/02/2025 10:10

You’re a Southerner he’s a Northener?

Olika · 01/02/2025 10:11

That's a normal comment to me

Agree with this. I live in the Lakes and people from outside the area seem surprised there are people living here who do the kind of jobs you get everywhere. Loads of visitors have said to me "What do you do?" it doesn't occur to them that people in rural areas attracting tourists also need teachers, healthcare workers, solicitors, accountants, social workers etc.

It isn't a theme park it's a working community trying to survive against the backdrop of tourism.

Waterboatlass · 01/02/2025 10:44

Maybe he had made a leap to something about buying up holiday homes and pricing local people out, homes stood empty and that line of thinking? It is a valid point generally but not what you had said. Sounds like you were speaking about your personal preference. Rude to conflate your comment and that point if indeed it was his connection.

desperatedaysareover · 01/02/2025 10:57

I’d stick that one under ‘a thing a random man said’ - he sounds like he’s looking for an issue and lacking in social grace.

Bluelagoondrmr · 01/02/2025 11:26

I think he meant a "townie" attitude. I like rural places too but no way on earth I would not want to live in one - I like having all the supermarkets I want close by and everything else in between. So yes, I would say nice for a holiday wouldn't want to live there too. He obviously thinks differently and looks down his nose at us townies!

Winterysun · 01/02/2025 19:18

Thank you everyone! No, I'm not from London, I live on the South East coast.

I wanted to ask him what he meant, but felt too uncomfortable. Tbh the fact that it's still on my mind must mean I have some social anxiety too. I wish I'd been brave enough!

Having read your comments, I now understand the frustration some people may have, living and working in a popular 'holiday' destination, but people not seeing it as a place for everyday living.
I'm glad the majority of you realise I wasn't being negative though! x
