I'm taking my autistic DD to her first concert at the Academy 2 tomorrow. She is beyond herself with excitement but I don't often take her away by myself and I'm having last minute nerves.

My main worry is getting back to our central Manchester hotel afterwards. I have a ton of anxiety when out late with the DC's (I was attacked years ago) but I dont want DD to pick up on anything whatsoever. She has been looking forward to this for months and just want her to feel calm and enjoy herself. Would anyone know if it would be better/safer to get a bus (if they are still running) or get an uber? - Though I imagine we'll have to wait a while as lots of people will all be leaving at the same time. I expect the concert to finish about 10. Any advice would be very appreciated!

Buses will still be running. If you prefer a taxi you could book one. A cab driver I know has told me that Uber do not do checks on their drivers like black cab companies do. I hope you and your daughter enjoy the gig.

Would the trams cover that journey? They are very good.

If the hotel is very central and the bus will take you right there go ahead. But if you have to get off at Piccadilly and walk a while get a taxi. Uber is fine or you could probably walk up Oxford road a bit with the crowd and hail a black cab. There will be lots of people about at that time in that area which I think is safer .

There will be loads of people about in that area at that time (students etc) and lots of buses. You will be fine to hop on a bus but if you prefer there will also be black cabs passing so hail one of those.
Oxford Road and central Manchester on weekend nights sometimes feel as busy and safe as Saturday afternoon when it’s rammed with shoppers.

I’d probably start walking towards town and either jump on a bus or hail a taxi. Or just walk. It’ll be busy and very safe on a Saturday night

Hotel is very central! Relieved to know it's busy and feels safe though. Wasn't aware it'd be easy to hail a cab. Might try and do that or just get on a bus. The trip is only a minutes according to my phone.

How was it OP?

SaunteringDownwards · 02/02/2025 12:15

Great thanks @Gobimanchurian! DD had an amazing time and said it was the best night of her life. There were buses right outside the Academy so we were back in central in about 15 minutes so not nearly as scary as I thought!

That's good @SaunteringDownwards. I came to your post too late to add anything others hadn't but hoped it had gone ok for you both!

Many a time I've gotten the 42 to and from the Academy to town, or ended up walking back still buzzing from the gig 🤗. It's always busy and never felt unsafe. First of many, hopefully!
