Why is there so much focus on the plane crash in the USA?

I’m saying it’s wrong necessarily, but it’s been rolling news all day and I can’t understand why.

It’s awful and tragic and the families need answers, but why is it rolling news?

It’s a pretty unusual event.

B2B25 · 31/01/2025 15:28

Presumably because it should have never have been possible? Not with the tech we have now.

Needmorelego · 31/01/2025 15:28

I think it might be because the helicopter was military and people seem obsessed with conspiracy theories these days.

But humans were flying the helicopter and there will always be human error, which it seems this was.

It does feel like something bigger is being hinted at but it just seems clear to me that someone made a mistake which had tragic consequences.

Becuase it's in America? It's sort of a big deal of a country

VotingForYourself · 31/01/2025 15:34

Because America take airplane safety very seriously so it's very unusual and a big deal.

Mishmashs · 31/01/2025 15:35

I think also because flying in the states is extremely safe so it’s a very unusual event. The one in South Korea was also big news. Also due to the sad angles - the young skaters and dedicated coaches.

TheCrowPeople · 31/01/2025 15:35

Aviation safety affects many millions of people?

MidnightPatrol · 31/01/2025 15:35

It basically shouldn’t have been possible for two aircraft to collide in mid-air.

Of all the things worried about with air travel… mid air collision is something broadly avoided due to the technology and processes we have in place.

Air travel is really very safe in countries like the US. For an accident to happen in these circumstances is an absolutely massive cock up.

That it was a US military vehicle… and looking like it was in the wrong place - presents huge questions / challenges in the US given so many civilians have died as a result. What were they doing? Why? Is this a frequent occurrence?

And - the tragedy of course of those children and talented athletes being quite newsworthy.

Chersfrozenface · 31/01/2025 15:36

And a fair number of people from the UK fly to, from and around the US, on holiday and on business.

Some of them, at least, will want to know whether there is a systemic problem with aviation safety, and air traffic control in particular, in the US.

GrumpyPanda · 31/01/2025 15:36

I don't see that this is getting any more attention than the mid-air collision near Lake Constance did a couple of decades back.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 31/01/2025 15:38

Does anyone know if it was a Boeing? Or what type of plane it was?

SheilaFentiman · 31/01/2025 15:40

Fatal incidents with transport often are headline/rolling news for a few days whilst people do not have a picture as to what happens. See also - Bayesian yacht, Titan sub. It then subsides for a while until something new happens e/g/ interim accident report issued.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 31/01/2025 15:42

Because everything in USA seems to dominate our news, even weather events seem to get headlines. By comparison a colleague was only saying this morning about what's going on in Sudan and I was embarrassed that I know nothing about it as I only watch mainstream news. We value the welfare of some races and countries over others, whether we realise it or not. In the same way the release of 1 Israeli hostage is a big news story but the 50 Palestinian hostages released in exchange are never pictured or mentioned by name. I guess we prioritise humans that are culturally closer to us over others. When you stop and think about it it's quite shocking.

Janetfrommarketing · 31/01/2025 15:42

Because the US is popular with UK tourists.

Because there have been a few plane crashes lately

Because Trump is loud

Because it’s a tragedy.

Because bad news sells clicks via website traffic

Bombardier CRJ-700 jet

Not a Boeing. Manufacturer information is readily available, LMGTFY…

The plane, a Bombardier CRJ700, had travelled from Wichita, Kansas. It was operating as American Airlines flight 5342.

Cosycover · 31/01/2025 15:44

Well I think its fairly obvious. I for one certainly want the full story.

Doloresparton · 31/01/2025 15:46

Well Trump’s bizarre response will be adding to the news about the accident.

And it’s a scary thing to happen.

Chersfrozenface · 31/01/2025 15:46

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 31/01/2025 15:38

Does anyone know if it was a Boeing? Or what type of plane it was?

It was a CRJ700 - CRJ stands for Canadair Regional Jet - built by Bombardier, a Canadian firm.

AgnesX · 31/01/2025 15:48

It's being politicized.

When it should be about the human tragedy which in itself is shocking; it's being turned into a political witch-hunt against minority groups.

CreationNat1on · 31/01/2025 15:50

Unusual tragedy.
Many deaths
Young athletes
Iconic location
Mad Trumps response.
Army involvement. Training, security etc.
Huge recovery response.
Analytics data is available.

There is a lot to report on.

Hoppingabout · 31/01/2025 15:51

Because it's something that shouldn't really be able to happen.

And the DEI issue that Trump has raised re the ATC.

And because plane crashes in Washington near an inauguration date might have initially looked like something policitical (although I don't think that is the case now)

HollyBerryz · 31/01/2025 15:52

Probably because it's rare for there to a mid air collision
