How do you pronounce this name?

It's a girl's name, Laiba. Is it Lye-ba or Lay-ba? I really don't want to get the pronunciation wrong and there's not the opportunity for me to ask in advance.

Labia? Sorry, that's what immediately jumped out at me!

WineIsMyCarb · 31/01/2025 14:20

Lay-ba. Pronounce very carefully !!

fruitbrewhaha · 31/01/2025 14:21

It’s lie-buh

Its sweet. But I expect a lot of people will see labia.

I'd say Lay-ba.

When I first read it I regrettably imagined a second i

BringOnFebBankHoliday · 31/01/2025 14:24

My instinct is Lay-ba, but if it's not an English name I'm open to correction.
If you get it wrong in sure you'll be corrected. I have a name that often gets mispronounced - I simply let people know how to pronounce it. It's not a big deal (despite MN horror at having a name no one will know how to say).

Tuopo · 31/01/2025 14:27

the one I know is lie bah

Purplecatshopaholic · 31/01/2025 14:27

Ooh blimey, now there’s a name with unfortunate potential for embarrassment (in English speaking countries anyway). I hope for her sake it’s more Lie-ba than Lay-ba..

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 31/01/2025 14:32

Could you ask as you meet her? It's not impolite to ask someone how to pronounce their name if you're not familiar with it. I'd probably go for Lie-ba.

MumChp · 31/01/2025 14:33

I would ask not guess.

PollyPostItNote · 31/01/2025 14:39

Thanks everyone, some of you have highlighted why I'm worried about getting it wrong! According to t'internet it can be pronounced both ways so I'm no further forward

OP posts:
Antebell · 31/01/2025 15:00

My dd goes to a culturally diverse school and the girls she knows say it Lie-bah

mynameiscalypso · 31/01/2025 15:02

I know a Laila and it's pronounced Lay-la so my instinct would be to go with that.

Snowmanscarf · 31/01/2025 15:03

I would read it as Lay- ba, but wonder if it should be La-i-ba.

Chuchoter · 31/01/2025 15:06

Why not say, 'I'm not familiar with your name so please would you tell me the correct pronounciation!'

Otherwise you may get your tongue in a twist trying to pronounce it.

Whoarethoseguys · 31/01/2025 15:08

Can you just ask.her how she pronounces her name?

BringOnFebBankHoliday · 31/01/2025 15:11

Antebell · 31/01/2025 15:06

Here’s a video that may help!

That video gives every pronunciation possible, so not sure it's much help 😆
@PollyPostItNote I think the only thing to do is ask.

If you look carefully ,the speakers from India/ Pakistani say Lie-bah. It’s some of the automated anglicised speakers that say lay-bah. As I said my dd ,goes to a culturally diverse school hence why I would automatically say lie-bah…but obviously the best thing to do is check “ have I said your name right?”

Me too . Definitely not a name to call a baby

Yes I did see that, but OP hasn't said the person is from India or Pakistan.

Are you just wanting to be obtuse ?

What she means is the real people (from Pakistan, India and the US) say Lie-bah and the AI says Lay-ba. In other words, believe the real people not the AI because it makes things up.

I have no issue with difficult to pronounce names but I draw the line at a name that so easily can be misunderstood as a part of female genitalia. :)

Anon9898 · 31/01/2025 15:43

This is my best friends daughters name. Her name. They pronounce it lie ba.

Likewhatever · 31/01/2025 15:44

Have you considered La-ee-ba?
