How much pocket money do your kids get?

cadburyegg · 30/01/2025 20:48

I've just read on another thread about a 12 year old getting £10 a week pocket money and realising I probably need to increase my kids a bit more!

Hardly anyone I know gives their kids pocket money these days.

My dc are coming up to 10 and 7. If yours are similar ages what do they get ?

My 12 year old gets £5 a month so....

My teens get £45 a month which is clothing allowance. I buy school uniform, one pair of casual shoes and the basics for sports/hobbies. They buy all their casual clothes, shoes they want over and above the one pair, coats they want over and above the one good coat I buy and cover all their social lives etc. oldest teen has a job and saves as well as spending a fair bit. Younger teen squirrels money away.

The 12 year old will progress to clothing allowance when they turn 13.

My 15yr & 16yr old havent had an increase for years, they get £20 a month. They don’t spend it and get alot of cash for birthdays and Xmas they also don’t spend, hence I feel no need to give them anymore.
Ds gets a food allowance for college on the top.
I pay phones, all clubs, give cash for friends bdays, and give cash for lunch on the (rare) occasion they go out. Neither care about clothes or grooming.

TheBlackSheepbaaaa · 30/01/2025 21:19

13 year old twins, they get £35 a month each.

Decapitatedsausage · 30/01/2025 21:24

My 12 year old gets £5 cash a week, plus one of his gaming subscriptions paid for.

ATreeNamedFred · 30/01/2025 21:25

12 & 15 get £20 per month.

Monvelo · 30/01/2025 21:26

Mine are 7 & 10yo. They get £1 basic rate and £2 if they've done all their school homework plus other tasks such as practicing musical instruments.

HPandthelastwish · 30/01/2025 21:28

I've always linked mine to the amount recommended for a foster child so £8 for 15 year old DD, unlinked to routine chores. She can earn more for stuff I just don't want to do like wash the car.

She gets a £1 per grade for half term assessments which bankrupts me as she gets ,9s but works incredibly hard.

At 14 she wanted to earn more so she got a job at a charity shop and I pay her £5 an hour for that too.

pandapopadance · 30/01/2025 21:29

13 year old gets £7 a week
9 year old gets £5 a week
They can earn more doing some jobs if they are saving for something in particular.

Sprig1 · 30/01/2025 21:30

Age 14. Doesn't get any, never has. Isn't really interested in buying anything. Does get money from family for Christmas which is saved for big ticket items.

CockSpadget · 30/01/2025 21:37

13yr old gets £10 pw and his monthly Xbox subscription paid for, but he has to make sure his bedroom and bathroom are kept clean and tidy, his homework is done on time, and he walks the dog.

ShiftySquirrel · 30/01/2025 21:41

I'm on the stingier side- but I don't earn huge amounts so that's why.

At primary age mine didn't get pocket money. They're teens now and get a tenner a month to their accounts.
I pay for clubs, clothes, trips out with friends, proms, some holidays etc. Eldest will also get paid by grades for GCSE results in the summer on a sliding scale.

MissCalamity · 30/01/2025 21:42

15 year old DS gets £7.50 per week, we pay for his mobile contract.

gettingolderbutcooler · 30/01/2025 21:43

£10 weekly for 15yo. And they get birthday money as well as extra cash for holidays so they can go out.
Like pp, they will also get cash based on GCSE results.

HippeePrincess · 30/01/2025 21:47

I pay DS phone contract and Xbox subscription, DD gets a Nintendo online thing. That’s it. They can wash the car or walk the dog for extra pocket money. They are supposed to keep their rooms tidy, our own washing away, eldest had to do the dishwasher once a day and the youngest has to feed and water the dog. If they did their chores without being reminded I may consider a raise.

AllTheChaos · 30/01/2025 21:52

DD just turned 11, and gets £12 a month. Has to pay for birthday and Christmas presents herself (with a bit of help), but otherwise she mostly spends some on sweets etc. and saves some
for days out. Far too young for a phone so no costs there, and I pay for clothing and clubs etc. She helps each week with the cleaning and has to keep her room tidy (ish!)

Puppypower90 · 30/01/2025 21:53

6 year old DD gets £2 a week on her go Henry card. She gets a bonus £2 if she does certain things such as little chores, reading every night, helping make her bed etc.. I find it works really well having an incentive. She loves the go Henry card!

foodtoorder · 30/01/2025 21:55

7 and 11, they don't get pocket money and rarely ask for anything so when they do, within reason it is a treat.

They both do the odd chore and know they will become more regular as they get older with an expectation that if they don't then things won't be given/paid for.

RamblingEclectic · 30/01/2025 22:10

A tip I got on here a long time ago is to look up for your local area the recommended pocket money for children in care. These things vary a lot over the country, so that gives a snapshot of your area. It also varies by how much you are paying for them and what they are paying for themselves - the more you want to buy for themselves, the more they'll need.

Where I am currently it looks like it's £4 a week for the younger two and £6 per week for the 12 year old + a bit into savings, but I imagine in far more expensive areas, this would be a lot higher.

At 7 & 10, my kids were getting about £3, with more being earned for additional chores

At 12, mine got the same, but with more chores available that paid more and they also got a monthly bus ticket that covers much of the city and a limited phone.

At 13, my kids get a current account with a debit card - it's the youngest my bank has them for signing up online. It's then £8, and the type of chores now includes some more out of the house tasks.

sunnypeachesk · 30/01/2025 22:15

13 year old £10 a week (never spends it!) and his PlayStation subscription paid for too. I buy all his clothes/toiletries etc.

workstealssleep · 30/01/2025 23:39

Mine got £5 a month until age 11, and then I changed it to £2 a week.
August, they get double, to see them through the holidays.
