Can a hospital book a surgery by mistake ?

I have been called today by the hospital telling me they have a date free for my surgery (gallbladder removal) so I’m all booked for it. However I got a letter afterwards giving me an appointment for a mri on the 15/02 to check my gallbladder again then they can proceed with the surgery. I have emailed them, called but spoke to no one. Is it possible the surgery team made a mistake ? Thank you

Sounds more like the surgery is maybe a cancellation and the dept dealing with MRIs don't know you have a surgery date

Typical left hand not knowing what the right hand are doing

Is the surgery date before the MRI date? Or after?

In my experience (I’ve had a lot of surgeries), pre-op assessment has been very quick to move. My assumption would be that the MRI is to assess how to proceed with the surgery, not if, and is part of the usual pre-op box ticking.

I had the same thing happen — surgery cancelled and I had to have another scan. Which showed exactly what the previous scan had shown. I wondered if it was just a case of “ we have to cancel some of these ops but can’t actually say we’re cancelling because that counts against us when we tick boxes”
I waited a further 3 months for surgery.

I really hope you get your surgery, I have gallstones and know the absolute agony of them x

Sharkinthepark1 · 30/01/2025 21:33

Thank you @WickWood. I’m self employed and I just book 2 weeks off - if the surgery doesn’t go ahead I’ll lose lots of money :(

@Sharkinthepark1 Please tell them that if they try and cancel, it's absolutely not okay due to the amount of pain/disruption they cause! X

Edited

As another one who has had a lot of surgery, I agree.

I can’t work out from your post whether the date for the MRI is before or after your surgery. FWIW, I’ve never had a surgery cancelled.

The surgery is on the 03/02 and the mri is on the 15/02.

Oh

Well that's a cock up

Sharkinthepark1 · 31/01/2025 09:37

They canceled

I'm so sorry. Did they give any inclination as to when they'd rebook? How often are you getting flare ups? X

Sharkinthepark1 · 31/01/2025 13:37

I just had a pancreatitis that’s why they are keen to have it out asap but now it’s likely March

Ah, I'm in the exact same situation, I was in hospital over the weekend with pancreatitis.

I can't believe how little is done to be honest when it causes such dangerous complications! You'd think they'd want them out ASAP as really it just costs more money and time if people get pancreatitis etc.

My MIL has been waiting 18 months for a knee op, she can barely walk. Yesterday they cancelled it for the second time with no explanation!
