What's good from Costco?

Any food recommendations? Is it worth the price of the membership?

All their own brand products are good quality, particularly the meat. It won't save you any money if that's what you are looking for. We gave up our membership because the house is just too small to buy in bulk!

TeenagersAngst · 30/01/2025 14:36

We only really keep the membership for the cheaper fuel prices but even they aren't great at the moment.

It's no cheaper than the supermarkets, in my opinion.

Solaire18381 · 30/01/2025 14:39

For the size of the Birthday cakes, that you can order and personalise, they are good value. You can often get one off the shelf too, just with Happy Birthday on, or whatever.

Bottled water and bottles of soft drinks are usually good valve compared to the supermarkets. Some of the ready meals are nice.

Darkplums · 30/01/2025 14:41

I buy coffee beans, kinder bueno and petrol on a regular basis.

I also like the kimchi, mixed olives and large tubs of Yorkshire provender chicken soup.

A lot of what they sell food wise is highly processed and not very nice.

ExtraDisorganised · 30/01/2025 14:44

Some things are much cheaper, some aren't. The only way to find out for sure is to go round with your phone and compare prices. When we go there I do a bit of that and keep the receipt and check other things when I get home for future reference. IME things in bigger containers than in supermarkets seem to be cheaper than multipacks of supermarket size. So we bought a 1.5kg jar of mango chutney last year that worked out about a third cheaper than small jars of the same brand in the supermarket, big tubs of peanut butter are about £5 instead of £7 or 8 elsewhere (also same brand). A lot of it is just that it makes a nice change from going to the regular supermarket, you never know what you are going to find.

ManchesterLu · 30/01/2025 14:44

The savings on petrol - for us - make up for the cost of the membership. We also like the birthday cakes and the catering platters. We don't really buy a huge amount else from there, but as I say, the fuel alone is worth it for the amount we use.

Sourdoughnovice · 30/01/2025 14:44

Thanks. I was looking at bulk buying carbs etc hoping to save some cash. Is it not worthwhile?

OP posts:
ExtraDisorganised · 30/01/2025 14:45

Unfortunately ours doesn't have a petrol station

ExtraDisorganised · 30/01/2025 14:46

We don't tend t bulk buy carbs because of storage space. You can look up prices online before you go if you are after particular things.

It's 13p a litre cheaper where I live and Costco is 11 mins away.. so well worth the trip to fill up!

Hoppinggreen · 30/01/2025 14:48

Cookies from The Bakery
I don't think we really save money by using Cosco but we do enjoy it

TeenagersAngst · 30/01/2025 14:50

@bluemoons3 lucky you! Ours is currently only 3p cheaper than the local Tesco. Used to be much better so maybe the supermarkets are dropping their prices to compete. Guess it depends where you live and how far things are from one another.

Darkplums · 30/01/2025 14:50

They do sell massive bags of pasta but I don’t think it’s y cheaper than buying multiple smaller bags in the supermarket. If you want rice you are better off looking in the world food aisles of any other big supermarket. They did however have good value kikomen soy sauce a few days ago.

I remembered that I also bought a TV there and AirPods! Cheaper than John Lewis.

TeenagersAngst · 30/01/2025 14:51

And obviously if you're VAT registered and can feasibly put it through your business then that's a bonus!

ExtraDisorganised · 30/01/2025 14:53

Yes, I got airpods very cheap there last year, I'd forgotten that. And an electric toothbrush about half what it was on Amazon.

Floralnomad · 30/01/2025 14:54

We go once a month at least - petrol , Kirkland loo rolls , Kirkland kitchen rolls , frozen mixed berries , bottled still / sparkling water , harpic , dettol laundry cleanser . I buy their salmon and smoked haddock fillets not particularly cheap but they are much nicer . Mince pies at Christmas and their cooked chickens are fab . You can also pick up some bargains eg this month they have Skechers down to £23 and my daughter got 2 pairs ( adult). If we lived closer we’d go more often but at the moment our closest one is via the Dartford crossing .

ARichtGoodDram · 30/01/2025 14:55

We're a big family so fruit is good for us (I know a few others for who it doesn't make sense as they don't get through it).

Cheese
Yoghurts
Butter
Crackers
Wraps
Rolls
Liquid soap
Laundry liquid

We're lucky to have storage space so when they're on offer we stock up on

Hot chocolate pods (tassimo)
Pasta
Toilet rolls
Soft drinks
Crisps

Their meat is good value, but we have an excellent butcher literally in our street so we don't get it from Costco.

JollyViper · 30/01/2025 15:40

Would you be able to go with someone who already has a card ( there are quite a few professions it's now available to)
I don't "love it" it's not the sort of shopping I do , I've got a multi ethnicity shop that's better value for beans/pulses/rice. Fresh veg great market stall. Washing powder is either from Amazon B&M or powder is Asda cheapest.
It's definitely not as cheap as you might think , for example crostica & molllica pizza is usually cheaper in Waitrose than Costco.

MinnieCauldwell · 30/01/2025 15:53

Itsvsomewhere different to shop, not always cheaper, but their organic quinoa is excellent value. We buy:
Chargrilled artichokes in 2 jars, good in salads
Greek salad dressing, in the summer months
Socks
Underwear
Jeans
Duck Spring Rolls are good quality
Chicken gzos
Fresh filled pasta

A lot of the chicken ready meals contain Thai chicken but the fresh is British I think.

Their white goods and tv's come with 5 year warranty.

I often split bulk buys with a friend

ARichtGoodDram · 30/01/2025 15:59

Forgot chopped tomatoes. A few pence dearer than the supermarkets own brands but much nicer

Also cereal, ketchup and mayonnaise is very often on offer and cheaper than the supermarkets

HaroldLeftEye · 30/01/2025 16:10

I have a shopping list with Tescos cheapest price per kilo/litre on and compare as we go round.

Some of the tinned goods like tomatoes or coconut milk are Tesco prices for premium brands. We buy a lot of cheese in kilo packs where Tescos does 700g max. Branded cereal is cheaper. Kirkland goods generally good.

Petrol is great though, usually 10p a litre cheaper.

EweCee · 30/01/2025 16:13

Meat may not be cheaper but better quality for same price we find. Vegetables and fruit also good. Toilet paper. Books. Cheddar cheese. Pasta and coffee. And they do nice pastries and ready meals.

You just need storage space to store it all! We got about once every 5-6 months.

ChristmasPudd1990 · 30/01/2025 16:16

Out regular buys are bottles of Kirkland water, big tubs of Galaxy hot chocolate, big boxes of cereal, muffins and pastries, bottles of Starbucks iced coffee.

ChristmasPudd1990 · 30/01/2025 16:18

Oh and their big bags of chicken nuggets made with proper chicken breast.
