Would it be safe to leave a mobile router plugged in for a week on its own

I don't have household broadband. I just use my mobile phone for internet and hotspot etc.

I am due to go away next week. I want to power a pet camera to view my pet hamster while I am away.

I bought a mobile wifi router. It came from Amazon. It looks like a very small mobile. It has a removable back and battery where the SIM goes to. You can plug it in.

I am wondering would it be safe to plug that in and leave it in?

I am concerned about overheating etc and you would read things online about this kind of battery stuff exploding.

I think it's a li-on battery or something like that.

Would it be safe to plug it in and leave it in.

Thanks

Is someone not going to be going in to change the pets water and give fresh food? Surely they could turn it off for you in the day and back on at night.
But no, I wouldn’t leave that plugged in for a week.

purplecorkheart · 29/01/2025 13:59

No I would not leave it plugged in all the time.

coldcallerbaiter · 29/01/2025 14:06

Can you just get a mobile router without a battery? Or are the all like that? No plug in only ones?

I am not going away for too long. Going from Monday to Friday and apparently hamsters can be left for a few days (3/4) with plenty of food and water. So there won't be anyone going in.

I explored online. Basically I think I would likely be locked into a contract with other regular routers.

My other alternative plan after reading the comments here was to charge it and plug it out but reading online on other mobile routers it only really lasts about 8 hours on full use.

It is designed to connect 10 devices at a time. I will only have 1.

By "plug it in" do you mean to the mains electricity with a regular plug? If so you should be able to remove the battery and still have it work. The instructions may well say something about this.

If its a proper rechargeable battery designed for long term charging/recharging then it should be fine to be in the unit whilst its plugged in. Plug it in for 24 hours and see if it gets warm. Then run it without power and see how long it lasts connected to the camera.

It was only delivered to me this morning. I will set it up tonight. It's a device that is very small. Maybe about half the size of a mobile phone. I don't think it will work without the battery.

By plugging it in, I meant, it has a wire and I meant would it be ok left plugged in. The wire is like a charger. I think it may have some hours without charging. Maybe 8.

I wish I did more research on it.

I need a router that I can plug in and leave it for 24/7 WiFi and something that can take a mobile SIM so I don't need to sign up to a contract.

Your thread title says a week. What if the water bottle falls off or it unexpectedly pees in its food dish?

I can get my mother to go into my hamster but she has no boundaries and she will root and snoop. Still need to set up a camera.

I got more of a solid router for plug in because I don't trust the mini mobile option that I have unfortunately. The router takes a SIM card so I will plug that in with my SIM card and hope for the best.

I have one that's been plugged in 24/7 for the last 2+ years, with no issue.

As in the small little thing I provided above in a picture?

I don't feel very confident with it to be honest as a just in case measure I bought a proper plug into the wall machine.

We use a similar one in our holiday home. It gets left plugged in for weeks at a time with no problem.

ETA: Ours plugs in via a USB phone charger if that makes any difference.

TossieFleacake · 29/01/2025 19:27

Is it designed to be used without being plugged in?
As in, the wire that plugs into the wall is a charger?
And you are worried it will run out of charge so want to keep it charging constantly?

If this is the case then absolutely no way would I leave it plugged in for that length of time.

Nacknick · 29/01/2025 19:33

But what will you do if the camera shows that hammie isn’t ok?

coldcallerbaiter · 29/01/2025 20:36

I know it sounds mad but can you have the hub in view of your camera? If it is smoking you would spot that. Obviously if it suddenly exploded then, oh dear. Can the camera pick up abnormal sounds? It could pick up a fire alarm going off.

veraswaistcoat · 29/01/2025 20:44

Don't worry - when one of our hamsters died the other ate it 😂

Thank you. I ended up buying another router that takes a mobile SIM. It is one that you plug in and itm feel more confident with plugging it in and leaving it on.

I am not with my hamster all the time and she is still good. This will allow me to view her and enjoy her more and interact with her more because the camera is a two was thing where I will be able to talk to her when she is awake and playing. It's doubtful the camera will show anything bad.

You can't leave a hamster by itself from Monday-Friday. That's 3 full days by itself and presumably 2 long days at the start and end too. It's need cleaned out, fresh food put in and fresh water in that time. You need someone to go in at least once mid week. It's neglect to be honest.
