if the car is still taxed ? Or is it not allowed at all?

Getting conflicting information so not sure what’s ok and what isn’t ?

No. If your car doesn't have a valid MOT, you can't park on a public road. The same applies to Tax too.

DreamW3aver · 28/01/2025 21:30

Gov.uk is crystal clear that you can't so I'd ignore anyone who says otherwise

TwentyTwentyFive · 28/01/2025 21:33

No categorically not you could be prosecuted if you do so. I'm not sure where the conflicting info is from but the Government website it's very clear.

I thought so . I’m being told by the LA that as it’s taxed it’s fine to be there. This has been going on for years the vehicle was initially SORN on a public road, then miraculously got a mot ! (Without moving as has totally flat tyres??!!) then when that ran out it has just been allowed to stay. It’s the fact it’s taking up a space on a busy road and we can’t ever park anywhere nearby so it’s really really irritating

You're not allowed to have a SORN vehicle on a public road either, so maybe they got their suspicious MOT after being reported for that? Report it.

Yes I reported it ! Multiple times and nothing happened except it suddenly had a mot. I reported that too as it was highly suspicious as it hadn’t moved ? And now it has an expired mot. And I’m the one having to park one or two roads away and carry my autistic child and I’m fed up of a space being wasted

I have seen cars clamped for no tax but I doubt they care if it hasn't got a mot if it's just sat there.

They didn’t care when it was SORN so no MOT is probably even less of a concern it’s just so frustrating

And it was SORN on a public road for over a year

There was a similar incident in a town near me about an abandoned car like this. The residents had reported it and reported it, and the council did nothing. Eventually all the local people got so fed up they held a birthday party for it, cake and all, and put it all over social media. It made the regional news! Lo and behold, the council finally got the message, and came and took it away.
😂

A car on a public road has to be insured, taxed and MOTd (if applicable).

MoleAndBadger · 28/01/2025 21:52

Correct me if I'm wrong but there are two separate issues. The LA cannot remove a vehicle which is taxed (regardless of the MOT status). The vehicle should be reported to the DVLA.

In order to remove an untaxed vehicle in my borough, the LA have to tick a lot of boxes. It can take weeks, if not months. I wouldn't bother reporting it to the LA, report it to the DVLA.

The parking issue is separate - If you have a permit to park then it will allow you to park in any permit bay within the associated parking zone. Clearly it is difficult if you have a disabled child but it would be an issue regardless of one car without an MOT.

Does your child have a blue badge? If so, can you not use that in order to park somewhere closer to your property?

Did you report it to the DVLA?

Yes and the LA . I’ve had to report at other times to the local police as was told only they deal with vehicles with no mot ? But they didn’t do anything either ? I told them all about my concerns about the authenticity of the recent mot as well before it expired as this car has literally not moved in nearly 3 years

OP posts:
MoleAndBadger · 28/01/2025 21:59

I don't think that the police will be interested as it isn't a priority. I would keep on reporting it to the DVLA, even if you make weekly reports.

RedRiverShore5 · 28/01/2025 21:59

They only seem to bother about tax because that is the revenue but other car offences are just ignored when they are dumped.

RedRiverShore5 · 28/01/2025 22:05

A garage near us used to dump lots of its old cars up on the street for weeks on end and no one cared about that either, fortunately it's closed down now, it's so annoying
