Is anyone’s Poinsettia not dying for once?

I don’t go early for Christmas - I put up my tree 17th at the absolute earliest. But I like a poinsettia really early on in December, maybe even late November and think they are a great lasting thing in place of a bunch of flowers.

I put the one I’d bought
(which was in rude health at the time) on the landing upstairs on the 6th of January expecting a managed decline from a 5 quid Sainsbury’s Christmas thing.

It’s thriving. 🤷‍♀️

Mine has sadly died. It's pitiful but don't have the heart to put in the bin.

rosydreams · 28/01/2025 21:11

Mine lasted all last year. I kept thinking it wouldn't make it so didn't look into how to make it red again. But they are still attractive green

Soulstirring · 28/01/2025 21:14

Ooh, my first poinsettia. It’s a teeny one. All the green leaves fell off but the flowers are going strong. Tiny bit of water every now and then and it’s sat on the window sill in full sun.

Bookish123 · 28/01/2025 21:19

Lots of sun is what they like. My Sainsbury's bargain one is now 4 years old! I'm ridiculously proud of it

NaughtbutKeys · 28/01/2025 22:06

Hope I wasn’t looking like I was crowing or something - I’ve been buying them forever with the understanding that they like to move on. I for the first time put it on the landing windowledge which isn’t only north facing but blocked by a new build.
it looks like its having a smashing time.

Mine is also still looking great. Bought on 12th December from Sainsbury’s, it hasn’t lost a leaf yet! It’s the best I’ve ever had.

Screamingabdabz · 28/01/2025 22:13

Yeah but I wasn’t falling for it. Christmas over. Sorry mate, green bin for you. Live long and prosper… as compost.

socks1107 · 28/01/2025 22:15

Mine is still looking lovely

LucyRidesAgain · 28/01/2025 22:18

My last years one shed all its leaves then regrew leaves, and then in December started to flower again!

NaughtbutKeys · 28/01/2025 22:21

Is it a Sainsbury’s 2024 thing? (I’m not on the payroll) I always used to buy mine in a tesco extra. This thing I might move back downstairs - it looks better than when I bought it weeks+ ago

Mines still alive too! A good year??

SkaneTos · 28/01/2025 22:25

Yes, mine looks lovely still, and the one I had last season looked great for a long time, too. It has made me happy, because they usually wither quite fast.

In my native language we call the poinsettia "Julstjärna" ("Christmas Star").

arsetambourine · 28/01/2025 22:26

My 2023 one is still going and flowered at Christmas, despite general neglect including not getting watered for a fortnight at the hottest time of the year and looking completely dead. Anyone know if I should feed it?

Happyelfjokeday · 28/01/2025 22:31

Mine from Sainsbury’s still alive this year too! The one from Morrisons died really quickly last year

Davros · 28/01/2025 22:35

Input my Poinsettia outside as I'd had enough. My amaryllis however...

What a lovely word/idea 🙂

Mines around three years old. Leaves turn green through the year then you put it in darkness for 12 hours each night from Nov and the leaves turn red again. I read a few weeks ago that I should be cutting the stems back to 10cm in March and then it will grow new stems for next year. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Boope · 28/01/2025 22:49

I always repot them straight away and they reward me by continuing to flower until I'm utterly sick of the sight of them. They usually get rehomed in the garden around July.
This winter is the first time I can remember not actually buying one.

dumpydumpydumpdump · 28/01/2025 22:55

I had one at work. No fucker watered it Christmas week when I had the nerve to have three days off. I resurrected it but then all the leaves bar two fell off. Nearly binned it but then saw new leaves growing. It's quite exciting. Looks shit just now but I think it might make it. It's on a very light east/north facing window sill and will have to lump it there.

Inextremis · 28/01/2025 23:03

Mine's 4 years old and seems to be becoming a bonsai version of itself. It was a tiny plant when I bought it from Lidl on a whim - in a 2" pot. I re-potted it, and tried the 12 hours a day in the dark thing a couple of years ago but it refused to change colour, so I've given up on that, and it's now just a load of small green leaves - but seems to be thriving, in a miniature sort of way :)

Periodicnamechanger · 28/01/2025 23:12

All the leaves have fallen off mine but the flowers are still going strong. I’m ready to move on to some indoor hyacinths or muscari but I’d feel guilty chucking it on the compost heap…

This winter is the first time i didnt buy one for DM like i do for every Christmas. We lost my dad in October and she said she didnt want anything Christmassy up including decorations I usually get her one in early November and DM makes them last until May/early June.
