Has anyone tried to cook a 'Singing Swede'?

Seen a few mentions recently of 'Singing Swede' as a way to cook swede that doesn't involve lots of chopping with a sharp knife and boiling it to within an inch of it's life 🙄😏

I love swede but not the prep, so I'm going to try it for tea today with some nice Richmond Sage & Onion sausages.

Off to bung it in the microwave now...

I did this a few times and it works but I completely forgot about it and have been chopping again.

Very disappointed that this thread was nothing to do with the Muppets.

We cook it like that all the time (nice and Richmond is an oxymoron)

This used to be a Slimming World favourite veg. I’d forgotten about it but will re discover now

Please don't!! 😱

I’ve never heard of it but I’m intrigued!

@Cheddarcheeseandsodabread would you mind posting the recipe/method please?

btw: what is the texture of it once cooked?

Well! What can I say?

That was a roaring success, and with swede only 11 calories per 100g, I have rediscovered one of my favourite veggies.

@Roaminginthegloaming no recipe or prep really.

Put whole swede (no need to pierce it or peel it) in a microwavable dish or on a microwavable plate.
Bung in the microwave.
High power for 20-25 mins - turning over halfway through.
Scoop out, and enjoy!

I had an average-sized swede and cooked it for 15 mins, then turned it over and did another 10 mins. Stuck a knife in it, and just 'felt' it might need 3 minutes more. It was very easy to scoop out (the outer part of the swede is hot so be careful) and it mashed easily with just a fork.

The dish I cooked it in had a sticky, crusty residue in it so that is currently in soak.

Just a tad disappointed though that it didn't sing!

Haha!

I love the veggie Richmond sausages, and they are a great addition to my calorie deficit diet.

I must say, though, that the caramelised onion version did give me awful indigestion! 😞

I’m just wondering if this is some sort of craze which explains why I couldn’t find a swede anywhere at the weekend.

I assumed they’d probably all been diverted to Scotland for Burns night!

TheSpottedZebra · 28/01/2025 17:58

I didn't know it was called singing swede, but I tried microwaving it once znd it was SUCH a faff.

It took ages to cook, it was so hot when I tried to handle it, and there was loads of waste as you couldn't get the flesh off the skin as close as you'd peel it.

Juliagreeneyes · 28/01/2025 17:59

I’ll eat almost anything, but the one thing I can’t bear is swede! Each to their own, OP!

MyCatNamedCookingFat · 29/01/2025 01:23

Mmm, mashed swede with cream and bacon!!

OP, I owe u a thank u for inspiration ☺️

I have cooked beetroots in them'wave at the weekend then peeled and shredded them in the food processor, sauted onion and garlic, added salt, pepper spices and shredded beetroot and I can't get enough of it!

I used to boil the beetroot before - never again!
Big thanks!
