Prompted partly by another thread, how would you feel about seeing a woman who’d had mastectomy as a result of breast cancer and chosen not to reconstruct topless on a beach?

OP posts:

I'd hope that you were enjoying the feeling of the sun on your skin, and be happy that you were alive and well and able to be there 💐

I would admire you from afar, and be glad that you were enjoying the sun.

This.

But I’d also worry about the sun damage on the scar. Scars burn so easily.

MeganM3 · 27/01/2025 00:14

I'd think she was quite cool and brave and strong. And hope she's wearing factor 30 at least.
I'd not have any negative thoughts at all tbh.

I saw a lady sunbathing at the Hampstead ladies pond with scars on her chest I assume from mastectomy. No one paid any mind. I had a brief look out of curiosity. Again I thought she must be a strong, brave, kinda cool lady.

Fine! Not much about the look of her to be honest.

then I’d think go on that woman for being so confident.

i might think I hope she has sun cream on any scarring but I’d think that about anyone who had something that I thought might be at more risk without sun protection

GildedRage · 27/01/2025 00:23

not every woman chooses reconstruction however the incision lines are very sensitive to excess sun and it's probably not recommended.
that aside after mastectomy most of the women i know need to wait 6-12 months for reconstructive surgery i'm not sure i would think much of seeing a woman doing this.

The same as I would feel about any other woman sunbathing topless, i.e. it would depend on the setting. In the middle of a very busy beach full of children in school holidays I might think it a slightly odd thing to do. On a quiet beach with a majority adults it wouldn't seem odd at all.

I would worry about sun damage

doodahdayy · 27/01/2025 02:18

I doubt I would even notice. I avoid staring at baps on the beach and don't care what shape/size they are.

I would worry about sun damage

Most Brits abroad look like burnt hams

Good for her - I've lost a family member and close friend to breast cancer so I wish they were here to be able to lie on the beach topless scars and all

peachgreen · 27/01/2025 09:02

OP, anyone who would think anything unkind or negative is a dickhead whose opinion you should pay absolutely no mind to, so don’t even worry about them. Have a great holiday!

@MrsSkylerWhite I'm also a uni, from 6 years ago, I used to use a foob (you can get good swim n gym ones!) now I just wear a bikini I like and if my scar shows etc it doesn't bother me. I haven't sunbathed topless, only because we haven't really stayed in the right resorts, more family friendly and my kids would have killed me boobs, boob or not!!
