How long is ‘too long’ to go without washing your hair?

As in, it still looks nice and doesn’t smell, but hasn’t been washed in x amount of days? I can easily go 3-4 days without washing my hair but I do it anyways because I think it must be gross not to, even though it looks and smells perfectly fine. For clarification, I’m just talking about hair, not bathing in general. If anything, my hair gets easier to manage and the style looks nicer if it hasn’t been freshly washed. I have straight hair if that matters at all, and I use dry shampoo which gives my hair nice volume.

TLDR; Gross, wash your hair regularly regardless! Not gross, only wash it when it looks/smells bad.

My hair has always been disgusting after 24 hours.
I don’t think you need to wash it until you need to!

Fawn87 · 26/01/2025 19:11

I wash mine daily. I've tried leaving it an extra day but it just looked lank. I read that it is best to wash frequently to remove dead flakes of skin from the scalp and dirt from pollution.

I wash my hair every day in the summer and every other day in the winter. Even at age 68, my skin and hair tend to get oily quickly.

I hate washing my hair, I dont have a shower and have to wash it from the tap with a plastic mug. I have tried one of those hose contraptions you put on the taps but they suddenly burst free and soak the bathroom or scald or freeze my head.
I manage it once a week!

Bellyblueboy · 26/01/2025 19:16

I was my hair every other day.

it loses its bounce on day three, but doesn’t smell. I can just tell it needs washed.

I went to university with a girl who didn’t wash her hair frequently enough and the smell and appearance was awful. So I am quite strict about washing my hair regularly.

KhakiShaker · 26/01/2025 19:20

I used to wash mine every day then gradually cut it down. I now wash it probably once every 3 weeks or so. It’s not greasy either, I just reach a point where I think I probably should wash it as I can’t remember the last time I did 😂

Pickled21 · 26/01/2025 19:22

I could go a week but my hair in it's natural state is curly and quite dry. I tend to wash it 2-3 times a week.

Wish44 · 26/01/2025 19:26

I wash mine once a week… because I feel like I “should”. I could actually probably go for about 3 weeks …. It’s very thick and dry. After I wash it it will still be damp by my neck 24 hours later..

namechangeGOT · 26/01/2025 19:26

I wash mine Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. I have very long thick dark hair. I don't wash it at all on a weekend and by Monday morning there isn't a chance in hell I'd leave the house with it looking how it does!

FortyFacedFuckers · 26/01/2025 19:29

I am shocked by some of these comments (and pretty jealous) I need to wash mine every day, I have tried everything to get longer but my hair gets so greasy I can't go any longer than a day

Haribosweets · 26/01/2025 19:30

1 day! I have straight fine hair and it gets 'greasy' after a few hours. I occasionally leave it a day and a ton of dry shampoo. I have to tie it up once it starts to go greasy.

Lyn348 · 26/01/2025 19:36

The combination of hard water and shampoo/conditioner was leaving my hair feeling sticky and horrid no matter how often I washed it. Now I just use bicarb and vinegar once a week plus a few drops of Argan oil after. I'm in peri though so hair is less greasy than before.

Tentententhen · 26/01/2025 19:37

between once a week and once a fortnight max. Many people overwash their hair but does also depend what styling products you use.

QwestSprout · 26/01/2025 18:38

I can't help but feel quite odd given the comments so far - my hair is disgusting after 24 hours and sometimes before! If I didn't wash it every day I'd be able to style it with its own oils.

Me too!

bloodredfeaturewall · 26/01/2025 19:38

up to a week provided I rinse it in between.

I shampoo/condition twice a week, but on other days I rinse my hair in the shower, just in the warm water.

oakleaffy · 26/01/2025 19:39

Six days - at a push -BUT a bristle brush keeps hair in ok condition but NOT living or working in London
Daily is needed there depending on tube line.

Jabtastic · 26/01/2025 19:40

Mine will last a week now thanks to my hair getting more dry as I age. It probably helps that I don't use products really but just wash and straighten with some heat defence serum.

WrylyAmused · 26/01/2025 19:40

Usually once a week.

More if I've been outdoor swimming or gotten sweaty or similar, but usually it's just tied up and out of the way, and doesn't need it.

Ezlo · 26/01/2025 19:46

Probably three days. It's starts to get really itchy after three days. Does anyone else get this?

niadainud · 26/01/2025 19:49

I think a lot of people need to wash their hair more often than they think they do...

EmmaEmEmz · 26/01/2025 19:50

I wash mine every 4-5 days.

Grapesandcheseseplease · 26/01/2025 19:51

I’ve got thick, wavy hair (and lots of it) and wash mine every three or four days. My daughter has tight curls and can’t wash hers more than once a week.

Greenbottle123 · 26/01/2025 19:52

Every other day. When I was pregnant I was able to go for about 5-7 days. It was about the only positive of pregnancy for me!

housemaus · 26/01/2025 19:58

Mine can go a week - when I was on some medication last year that made it really dry, I think I got to 10 days before it was visibly greasy. I usually wash it twice a week and any more than that makes it so dry.

I don't understand why you wouldn't wash your hair as often as you would your face, neck, anywhere else. It's just as dirty.
