Baby Cot Help

Hello wise mumsnetters! Please can I have some guidance?

DS has been an ok sleeper in our room in his little snuzpod. He’s cosy but he is now getting too big for it and it trying to turn in his sleep.

So I thought he would be ready for a “big” cot. But it’s been a disaster. He keeps going onto his tummy and waking up crying. And no amount of reassurance is helping the poor boy. So I’ve bought him back into our room and in his snuzpod and he’s sleeping peacefully again…but this isn’t a long term solution as he’s really getting too big for it.

Any tips on getting him to sleep in his big cot? Please!

How old is he? Can he roll fully yet? Do you use a sleeping bag or blankets? Sorry for all the questions but advice will depend on that... regardless be assured it can take them a little while to adjust, they look massive in their bedside cots and tiny again in their big cots!

Thank you so much for replying!! He’s now 6 months and can roll fully over and over again. He tries to roll in his snuzpod but doesn’t have enough space! In the day when playing he’s rolling everywhere. He has a sleeping bag!

We tried again tonight and he did an hour and then woke up and must’ve realised he had turned over and was crying so much. I tried turning him back and straight away he turned over and cried again.

So he’s back in his snuzpod in our room as I type this!!

Sleeping bag is best as he will be safe when he rolls about Smile
Have you tried him in the cot during the day - leaving him for a little while in there with soft toys or soft books so he gets used to being in it? Also spend time playing and reading in his new room in general if you haven't already.

As for the vastness of the cot - when my NCT group and I had newborns who would not stay in their bedside cots we rolled up towels/blankets and put them round the babies legs and body in a U shape when we put them down. The more cautious amongst us put the towel or blanket under the cot sheet. Not Lullaby Trust approved obviously but nowhere near their faces and it meant that they felt a bit more secure in a big space - when they kicked or waved their arms they could touch something. Maybe that would work here?

It won't restrict him from rolling. The more he spends time there and works out it is ok to have rolled onto his front hopefully you will all get some rest!

This might not be what you want to hear but we had a similar problem and a few disastrous attempts at moving into a cot (both in our room and in her own room) so we bought a chicco next2me forever after I saw someone recommending it on MN. It's smaller than a full size cot, but still attaches to the bed up to age 4 with a drop side. It's obviously not a long term solution as ideally I want DD2 into her own room at some point, but she's 10months now and it's got her through a couple of sleep regressions into a phase of being able to sleep better herself. It also works as a standalone cot / floor bed so hoping we can slowly transition her away from our bed and into her own space. She just absolutely hated the cot but doesn't seem to mind this as much.

Thanks all! Would rather keep the cot clear/safe sleeping guidelines.

I would really recommend you look at the next2me forever in that case. It complies with all Lullaby Trust guidelines and is basically just a big version of your existing snuzpod. https://ukbabycentre.com//products/chicco-next2me-forever-crib-cot-moon-grey?variant=53485966066043&currency=GBP&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google%2Bshopping&adGroupId=158782102956&device=m&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI88XL4fWSiwMVH5FQBh1XTRHyEAQYAiABEgLK3vD_BwE We bought ours here.

Looking into it right now! It looks ideal because it’s big but not “too big” if that makes sense?

We have decided now we’ve bought the big cot to keep trying it…any other tips please anyone?!

If you have used a snuzpod you can't be that bothered by safe sleep guidance. I'd go for the rolled up towels under the sheet while he gets used to the bigger space.

Are you placing him at the foot of the cot?

Are snuzpods not safe?! What?!

I’ve looked and can’t see anything saying they are not safe?

I'm curious also, I have an almost 4 month old and a snuzpod. I also can't find anything saying they're unsafe, care to elaborate please @Hercisback1 ?

Montevi · 26/01/2025 08:59

Oh I think you are confused. A snuzpod is a crib. Not a “nest pod”.

Google image it.

Hercisback1 · 26/01/2025 09:01

Ohhhh yes so sorry. I thought it was the padded nest thing.

I'd try something to make the cot feel a bit smaller.

I found a travel cot worked better than the big cot. Thankfully we had been given the big cot second hand as we never actually used it.

@Autumn1990 what a brilliant idea! We have an old maxi cosi travel cot from my daughter. Perhaps I’ll get a new mattress and try that. Thank you!

I hope it works for you. I don’t think travel costs need new mattresses something to do with it being thinner and harder so it doesn’t sag
