Eczema which doesn’t improve with hydrocortisone

Hi all,

Will be booking an appointment for ds2 on Monday but was looking for some advice. He is 10 months and has CMPA and a suspected egg allergy. From 6 weeks he has had eczema. He used to be covered in it and had to have antibiotics as it was infected. We had many GP appointments until a GP suspected CMPA and he was prescribed nutramigen formula which made most of it disappear.

He still has three patches of eczema (one beside his mouth and two on his back) which haven't improve when using hydrocortisone. He was originally prescribed the 0.5% ointment which was upped to 1%. I mentioned it last time he saw the gp for another issue recently but was told to continue using hydromol ointment and the hydrocortisone for 7 days when it flared up.

Has anyone else experienced this? I suspect he may have another allergy which is causing it as these patches only appeared when he started eating solids. His teeth only came in last month and before that he pretty much refused any solids.

Any advice appreciated. 😊

My DD had antibiotics and cortisone cream for hers but I felt uncomfortable to keep applying medical creams over time so I got her Dr Organic kids calendula lotion and kept applying it which calmed down the remaining of her eczema. There are other brands available too but I didn't like them. I still keep using the calendula lotion when she is itching.

My daughter didn't have it severely but one stubborn patch never went and got quite nasty. Wild and Wood skincare are AMAZING. A local Yorkshire brand, small business that has gone crazy online as so many people rave about it!! Their healing balm cleared up the eczema patch that the strong drs cream didn't. Would deffo recommend, it's pricey but I wouldn't be without it now!! All totally natural too 🥰

My eczema doesn't clear with hydrocortisone, need stronger steroid but not sure about use in babies.
Have you asked for a Dermatology referral? Generally v good with more difficult eczema.

Thank you all and apologies for the late reply! I’ll definitely look into the creams and push for a dermatology referral. 😊

I am an adult btw Grin but the only thing that works for mine is the paediatric Tacrolimus cream/ointment (the weaker strength, 0.03%), after all else had failed. But please do try all the milder creams first.

(The Tacrolimus was prescribed by a dermatology consultant after an emergency referral - it had all got a bit out of control - and now my GP manages it. I like the weaker strength cream because the stronger ones felt uncomfortable.)

Definitely ask for a dermatology referral. If normally takes a lot of trial and error to find the best combo, but you need an effective moisturiser for daily maintenance and something else for flare ups, plus allergy testing.
