I spent a lot of money on an experience and didn't enjoy it

There's something I've wanted to do for ages, do dh and I bought very expensive tickets yo do it. We travelled into London which he hated and it was short and wasn't for me, I left feeling stupid and sad that we spent out money on it. Dh said at least we gave it s go and we had the money spare. I enjoyed walking through St james park with dh more than the activity.
It's really made me doubt myself and worry about doing things in the future.

Oh God, I was thinking of booking this for my husband's birthday! Is it crap?

I took my F1 fan brother to this and he loved it. There is so much to see, a great mixture of technical info and just cool stuff. Grosjean’s car is jaw dropping. The gift shop is insanely insanely expensive though!

We did this with Dubai, if it makes you feel any better.

We took DS1 to the Dark Skies Observatory at Kielder. It cost us about £180 and was a 90 minute drive each way. We have wanted to go for ages and it was terrible.
The event was advertised as a magical experience seeing the night skies and stars in detail.
The reality was:
One of the big telescopes has been out for action for a year
The hatch over the other one didn't open and a member of staff was reduced to hitting it with a large bit of wood.
It was cloudy so we saw absolutely nothing.
The place you sit is near the compost toilet and stinks
It was split into 4 sessions. The first was a talk. The second was sitting watching a man make you a mug of cocoa because the telescope was out of order. The third was the man hitting the hatch with a bit of wood, it eventually opening and the clouds blocking any stars at all so he made a few quips to 'entertain' us. The 4th was a woman who had a few (6?) tiny rocks - supposedly bits of meteor but literally about a cm square of grey rock. She stood next to them for 30 minutes. She was nice but incredibly dull and only spoke if anyone spoke to her.
They had made no adjustments at all for a Plan B in terms of broken equipment, no ability to see stars.

It was appalling. We were really disappointed. Kielder were not interested in any complaints - and there were plenty made on the night and recorded online. They seem to think it's fine.

We felt like we'd been robbed. DS1 was so disappointed by it.

Edited

I am taking Kielder off my list. Your description is so vivid I feel like I lived through all that shitness!

Thanks for the warning about iron maiden, before kids dh and I saw lots of bands/singers who were maybe past their best but we were glad to see them before they died. Just seeing iron maiden will make me happy. I'm going on my own but know rock fans are the best.

I felt the same about Meat Loaf. I was a huge fan but when I saw him his voice was starting to go and I believe the rest of the tour was cancelled because he was ill. I was just so glad I'd seen him though.

Enjoy Iron Maiden!

Choccyscofffy · 25/01/2025 21:23

I felt like after being forced to go to the Warner Bros Studio tour. I thought it was going to be shit and it was shit!

The lowest point was seeing Ellen Degeneres studio. Who cares!

rookiemere · 25/01/2025 21:29

It's all so personal! I was hugely disappointed with ABBA voyage despite being excited about going, maybe my mistake was taking DH instead of friends. He was uncharacteristically enthusiastic until he revealed that he was very excited about seeing how they had made it all work from a technical basis Confused.

I just found watching a screen at about the same cost as a festival did little for me, the best bit was when the live band was centre stage.

But you win some, you lose some.

Surely that is just the luck of the draw on the night you go - either clear or cloudy

QuestionAir · 25/01/2025 21:34

I don’t think it helps that every ‘experience’ is just so expensive these days. Standards (quite rightly so) are set high before you go. A lot of the experiences would be perceived differently had you not had to spend the equivalent of many hours of work on them !

The rest of it sounded lacklustre too tbh. Broken telescope, broken observation hatch, dull presentations, smelly toilet....

MermaidMummy06 · 25/01/2025 21:43

Before we had DC, DH & I travelled a lot, did a lot of experiences & still try smaller ones with our DC. Some don't meet expectations, some still make me smile! All are good conversation & the bad ones make people laugh!

We view it as having done the experience is the joy, and even if disappointing, it's still not a waste to get out of your comfort zone & try something different. It is a very dull life to not try!

Still on my list of things to do, this doesn't put me off

ViciousCurrentBun · 25/01/2025 21:51

Except for museums, galleries and the very occasional theatre production I have rarely wanted to do stuff indoors. I went for a walk in the Peaks today and visited a stone circle, a trig point and ate lunch looking at glorious views across a valley up on a ridge. Had a cup of tea in a cafe and then some chips. The entire trip was about £25, out for 7 hours. It’s personal though but nothing beats nature for me.

He has the right attitude, it was something you wanted to try, you gave it a go and didn't enjoy it. At least you know now, you'd be just as upset if you had the chance to try it and didn't.

Glad you enjoyed walking with your DH, sometimes we take these ample pleasures for granted.

I hope it wasn't ABBA Voyage as that's fucking amazing.

I have seen this advertised and would love to see it. Is it like they are really there on the stage, back in the 70s?

NoWayRose · 25/01/2025 21:56

You could go to 10 things and three of them might be crap, but three might be incredible. And if you hadn’t had done all 10 you’d never have got to do the incredible ones. It’s the price you pay for having an interesting life!

RitaFromTheRanch · 25/01/2025 21:57

If it was the aquarium it's dog shit and £££

If it was skating at Somerset House, I’m with you OP!

A word of caution to manage your expectations for Iron Maiden. Sadly his voice is going - also have a look at recent setlists. Still enjoyable because IM fans are a lovely bunch.

Thanks for the heads-up. It wouldn't be the same without Nicko anyway.

Blue278 · 25/01/2025 22:02

My brother spent 12k taking his kids to Disneyland and they all had a bad time and hated it. One poor event is just life.

SapphireSeptember · 25/01/2025 22:02

I did the same thing in 2019! An expensive LARP thing I went to, went down on the Thursday and came home on the Sunday. Didn't know anyone there. I enjoyed bits of it, but other times I felt completely miserable and wanted to go home! I'm glad I tried it once, but once was enough.

@Strawberryorangejuice I am relieved to read @Blueemeraldagains post, we have tickets for February half term so hoping it wasn’t that. I am as excited as DC!

I'm not a fan but my parents are so grew up hearing it.
My daughter is a fan so took her her birthday. We both enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the simulator and some of it did go over my head but she was thrilled with all the info and things. Definitely worth the money.

TheGander · 25/01/2025 22:08

Beside the point but The Murder Exhibition??! The whole country has gone murder mad. Murder as entertainment. That sounds absolutely awful.
