What age did your children become brand aware/ conscious?

My oldest is 12 and not even vaguely brand conscious. I know some of his friends were in primary school. But my son seems completely oblivious.

DD 11
DS 14 but not really at all

So he doesn’t know Coke, Dominoes, McDonalds, no brand at all? Impressive

Ours watched F1 and football with their Dad so knew “brands”, and knew food brands quite young, but we talked about it all.

DS is 5 and he only knows it in terms of the tick on Nike is cool, or his bloody Sketchers (you can't call them trainers, you know! 👀)

BertieBotts · 25/01/2025 17:13

About 15/16 for DS1.

I never did. So I don't think all kids will inevitably care about "brands".

Meadowfinch · 25/01/2025 17:34

I have a 16yo ds. He doesn't care about brands, but is very picky about colours, styles and fabric.

He won't wear polycotton clothes, he says they are sweaty and uncomfortable. And to be fair he can always tell the difference without looking at the labels. Finding cotton or linen clothes that he likes is getting harder and more expensive.

But I suppose at least he doesn't want Ted Baker or other labels. 🙄

ArghhWhatNext · 25/01/2025 18:09

@Meadowfinch interesting, my 17 yo DS is exactly the same. Goes to vintage shops as there’s a higher likelihood of getting cotton/linen/wool there. He’s only really brand-aware for outdoor clothing and then it’s about quality/durability/ waterproofing rather than brand name. He also feels strongly about having a pretty minimal wardrobe. But he’s pretty eco-conscious.

Coldanddamp · 25/01/2025 18:13

Food brands eg McDonald's early but fashion brands age 10. He started asking what the tick was.

IdaGlossop · 25/01/2025 18:15

DD now 22 was obsessed with Hollister and Vans when 10/11/22. T-shirts and canvas shoes: I thought at the time we'd got off quite lightly.

GoodVibesHere · 25/01/2025 18:16

Mine are now 18 and 16, neither of them have ever particularly cared about brands.

pinkroses79 · 25/01/2025 18:18

I think it was around 10 for clothes. But definitely younger for shoes, he played football and wouldn’t have worn a brand he didn’t think was cool.
