Any dentists around? Aborted root canal and pain

Went for a root canal today. Dentist removed old filling and cleaned tooth- the smell was horrific 🤮. She said one of the canals was blocked, there was a hairline crack in the tooth and that the decay extended way into the gum and therefore whilst a root canal would be successful the rebuilding of the tooth was likely to fail.

I said OK fine, would have it removed and look into an implant in the future. She declined to remove it, saying their implant dentist would be better to do that, added a temporary filling and sent me on my way.

Even before the numbing had worn off my tooth started to throb horribly. It's not hurt before now as the abcess is had was painless and apparently draining into my sinuses?

I'm not sure if it's partly psychological as I smelled the infection and know it's still in there but my tooth really hurts! Is this just normal as it's been messed with today? I'm not due back at the dentist for 2 weeks and worried it will continue to throb and really hate the thought of all that infection just sitting there 🙁

Take some painkillers, see if it settles down. Hot salty mouthwash may help. It might just be because everything was opened up, but if it's sstill sore on Monday ring the practice. It might need some medicated paste inside the canal.

If you're in pain, call them on Monday and request an urgent appointment.

In the meantime alternate paracetamol or co-codamol and ibuprofen.

Dental pain is relentless and worse than childbirth, so take care of yourself.

If it still hurts after painkillers, try rubbing clove oil on the tooth.

This is why I won't have dental treatment on a Friday. Gives me the heebie jeebies.

Oragel from the supermarket. Should numb it up so you're more comfortable.

Thanks all. Ibuprofen takes it down to a background ache but it's hurting again 3 hours later. Have been alternating with paracetamol but paracetamol isn't doing too much 😕

I will not be in a hurry to go to the dentist on a Friday in future!

I would try phoning them tomorrow, the different dentist practices I have had have always been contactable on a Saturday even if just to have a telephone consult with the dentist

Try codeine as well.

Rinse with diluted TCP for the infection. Don't use hot water though.

It’s always a bloody weekend when these things happen. Hopefully it’s just aggravated from today’s appointment and it settles over night.

Ring first thing Monday. It seems unwise to have capped the infected tooth without antibiotics as now it’s trapped.

GG1986 · 24/01/2025 22:28

If pain is really bad then call 111 if that services is avaliable in your area and they will book you an emergency appointment.

Weyohweyoh · 24/01/2025 22:33

Go back to the dentist, tell them you are in pain. They will probably prescribe antibiotics to try and get infection under control until you can see the implantologist. Salt water rinse and painkillers until they can see you. They should have a weekend on call service.
