Re-training in middle-age

Has anybody else considered this? Or is anybody in the process of trying? I've got vague thoughts about re-training as a TEFL teacher. I can't see me going abroad, but maybe I could teach it online, or in a language school or something. Has anybody else done this? I'd really like to hear other people's experiences. So far as I can see, the CELTA qualification is the best.

MN has an entire board dedicated to retraining! It’s only a few years old - which is astonishing given its relevance to MN’s original purpose. You’ll find many, many middle aged people there who are considering retraining or already engaged in further study and starting new careers.

I did it :)

I retrained about 15 years ago. I combined volunteering with an introductory training course, then did the CELTA, got a local authority job and now work full time in a FE College.

CELTA is definitely the industry standard, but I advise you try volunteering and maybe a short TEFL course to start with. I think going straight into CELTA without any background experience at all would be very difficult - I know I would have struggled.
