Anyone else annoyed by how Easter falls this year?

Easter is a big deal in my culture (I'm not British) and we always travel to my parents to celebrate. I cannot drive for a medical reason and usually take my kids there by train (it's a good 3 hours away), going on the Thursday before and returning the Tuesday after. However this year the schools go back on the Tuesday directly after Easter Monday which is incredibly irritating as no trains are running over Easter weekend and I have 0 desire to drag two kids and a baby on replacement bus services. I can't host myself as my home isn't large enough.

So annoying!!

We've effectively fixed Whitsun, now, so why not Easter? I didn't think the Vatican or the C of E have any objections. if the Orthodox people don't like it, they can do their own thing.

WooleyMunky · 24/01/2025 17:22

OP, they have had eggs in the shops since Boxing Day, so I don't see why you are getting so worked up. Unless you are one of those people that waits until the Saturday to get the two for one offers.

The vernal equinox is notoriously small-minded and anglocentric. And good luck speaking to customer services at PhasesOfTheMoon, last time I was on hold for 28 days.

I found it much easier to just talk to the Easter bunny. 🐰

Schools shouldn't have to arrange holidays around Easter. It should be on timings so that breaks are appropriately spaced for pupils and staff. We are a secular country and Easter being a moveable feast shouldn't be prioritised. The four-day observance is catered for in bank holidays.

We’re a ‘secular’ country in inverted commas - in that we are really not.

Religious education is mandatory in schools, a huge number of state schools are linked to a church (about a third) and our head of state is also head of a church, we even have a church specifically for one of our countries - the Church of England. Christmas and Easter are given special legal status in terms of what can be open etc, and we have national bank holidays linked with these religious events.

OP could be talking about a religious school, and so it would be perfectly appropriate to arrange holidays around the religious calendar.

@RafaFan

Very commercialised, quite soon they'll be posts on Mumsnet about Easter dec's Easter trees, Easter experiences etc etc whereas it used to be an egg hunt and a prize of a modest sized buttons egg

cliffdiver · 24/01/2025 17:36

I find it more upsetting that we have to wait until March for pancake day,

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2025 17:39

Easter therefore moves to fit with Passover.

That was the theory...w.
In 2027 Good Friday is March 26th, Passover is April 21.

The UK could delink the spring break from Easter (as the USA does)
Yes - the idea of Parliament trying to change the date of Easter as mentioned upthread is bizarre, but it could change public holidays. Scotland doesn't have Easter Monday, it's not of any particular religious significance even so that could be moved.

Deadringer · 24/01/2025 15:35

I am not sure that Easter is arranged around your needs, but yanbu to be annoyed that it doesn't suit.

It is a religious holiday in our country. A bit like going back to school the day after Christmas and having to get home.

On the basis of the old adage 'book early to avoid disappointment', here are the Easter Sundays for the next six years, if that helps. You can actually look up the dates for the next 100 years (and more), should you fancy it but six years should help.

2026 - 5th April
2027 - 28th March
2028 - 16th April
2029 - 1st April
2030 - 21 April
2031 - 13 April

My daughter's birthday is 20th April. This is the 3rd time in 32 years it's fallen on her birthday but won't fall on it again until 2098 when she will be 105.

Sorry... useless information but interesting 🤣

FrivolousKitchenRollUse · 24/01/2025 17:47

It's all over the shop where I am. The schools I work for are going with the more traditional Good Friday week then Easter Monday week but as its very late that gives 5 fairly long half terms and a four week half term which isn't great. Whereas lots of schools in the area I'm in are either having the two weeks before GF week or the week before GF week and the GF week so must be a nightmare for parents with kids in different schools.

MrsSunshine2b · 24/01/2025 17:50

I think it's bizarre that in a 46% Christian country we have a Christian holiday which falls at different times based on the phases of the moon built into the calendar. Why we can't just have a spring break at the same time every year, I don't know.

stichguru · 24/01/2025 17:51

Yes it's annoying, be much better if it was a fixed date like Christmas, sensibly placed between Christmas and summer hols, but you can't change history!

lavenderlou · 24/01/2025 17:55

I'm a teacher and I'm happy about it. The Spring term is 12 weeks which is a good length and having the Easter Weekend falling at the end of the holidays means I get one of the bank holidays as extra holiday!

Sgtmajormummy · 24/01/2025 18:07

I’m happy about how it falls this year. DD gets Good Friday- Easter Wednesday off school (she’s going to London for a week, accommodation, flights and entertainment aren’t too expensive) then we’re joining her for our annual UK timeshare week starting 25/4.

25th April and 1st May are Italian national holidays and they “bridge the gap” to the nearest weekend.
So she gets 2 weeks for the “price” of only a few days off school.

Cant please ‘em all!

BoudiccasBangles · 24/01/2025 18:11

My birthday is Good Friday this year, so no complaints from me.

Thanks. It's my birthday end of March so will be able to be away somewhere warm hopefully in 2027.

dynamiccactus · 24/01/2025 18:17

I like it when Easter is late because it means bloody Mother's Day isn't on or near my birthday!

I agree that it wouldn't be beyond the wit of local councils in England/Wales to make sure that whenever Easter is, there is a week's holiday after it, so in this case the schools would go back on 28th. Or even do Wednesday to Wednesday as a pp said.

A few years ago there was an experiment where the Easter holidays were always the first two weeks of April but it didn't last long, probably precisely because people didn't like having to be back for school on the Tuesday after Easter. Or maybe it was because it meant there were two extra days' holiday if Easter was late. Or both!

I agree it's annoying. We drive but it means Easter Monday traffic is awful. As we are not tied to school holidays anymore we'll come back from my mum's on the Tuesday.

I also think that October half term should always be before the clocks go back so that people can make the most of the daylight.

Baddaybigcloud · 24/01/2025 18:20

Blame Jesus

TENSsion · 24/01/2025 18:24

I’d apply to the school to allow you to have the Tuesday off for religious observation.

Blame Jesus

made me smile, but while you are at it "blame" the Jews. The date of Easter is directly derived from Pesach (Passover).

AndThereSheGoes · 24/01/2025 18:29

I'm hacked off because Lent now falls March / April and a larger part of it is in the school holidays.
I give up wine and it's much easier to give up Feb / March because it's work. I'm not looking forward to giving it up with two weeks off. 😠

heyhopotato · 24/01/2025 18:30

I personally wouldn't do a 6 hour round trip with 3 kids on public transport at all, I'd have my parents come to visit me (and stay nearby if no space at home).

Rycbar · 24/01/2025 18:37

EmmaMaria · 24/01/2025 15:40

Isn't it the schools that you should be annoyed at, not "Easter". The celebration of Easter is fixed, and can't be moved. School terms can be moved easily.

They are moveable and my school have decided to have Easter in the middle of term which leaves us with 4 weeks back at school before May half term which is frankly ridiculous!!
