Will there be tornados in the Uk?

Or is it just speculation? The met office have mentioned strong wings, and the news websites are mentioning tornados. Is there any proof of this?

Tornados in the UK aren’t uncommon so it’s definitely a possibility.

There was one in Bodmin yesterday wasn't there?

If it's a tiny little thing that virtually does no damage I want to know, because there's a difference between that and the ones you get in America. And I don't want to be scare mongered, I want to be prepared

Tornados happen fairly regularly here, might move cars abit and take some tiles from the roof but no, they don't flatten whole towns. 104 tornados touched down in Wales in 1981.

The worst hit parts are experiencing 100 mph winds that's the same speed as a Category 2 hurricane but the biggest difference is we largely live in brick dwellings opposed to wooden houses or caravans that really experience the full whack so although sheds and fences might take a battering and a few rooves you can't compare damage here to in the US because our build materials are very different and will withstand more.

Depending where you live the most that will happen is your bin will be blown over.

I think you need to do a bit of your own research on this if it’s something you’re interested in knowing more about. In the UK we get a relatively high number of tornadoes for the size of the country. American has its share of small tornadoes, lots occur and most are low intensity. You only really hear about the more damaging tornadoes in the news and they aren’t as common. No one is scared mongering about tornadoes in the UK, they do happen and can be common with storm events.

You can compare damages everywhere to the US, as damage rating scales allow for this.

Your build materials are not “very different”, and the U.S. has seen 1,200 or so tornadoes yearly striking all different kinds of structures - your structures don’t “withstand more”, your structures are old, at their strongest, similar to the brick, half-timber and stone buildings destroyed in the Mayfield tornado of 2021 in Kentucky.

You simply don’t get tornadoes like the US does. 300+ MPH winds are often surveyed in U.S. tornadoes, but nowhere else in the world. The UK is far north and surrounded by water, so your atmosphere isn’t stable and you never get large supercells.

The U.S. gets multiple violent tornadoes a year. The UK has never recorded a violent tornado. It’s apples to oranges. There’s a reason there’s way more technically advanced meteorology, Doppler availability, and warning systems in place specifically for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in the US and basically nothing for the UK.

The UK has more tornadoes per square mile than any other country! Fun fact.
